Difference between Cold Air & Short Ram Intakes?
Can anyone elaborate on the technical differences between Cold Air and Short Ram intakes? Is there true advantage to going all the way to Cold Air or can I get the same performance advantages with a Short Ram? (besides Short Ram being a lot cheaper) My toaster thanks you.

cold air intake goes further away from the engine, thus providing cooler air...will it give you 5 extra horses? probably not...but it might sound cooler...lol...
with a full intake you run risk of sucking water into it also...i did that on my old car and it stalled out o_0 i just let it sit for a couple hours (cuz me and friends went to applebees lol) and it was fine...still scary ____ though

You will probably get varying opinions on which one is better. I have the Injen short ram. It runs as straight as possible into the fender cavity behind the headlight and foglight area. It is out of the engine compartment so it will pick up much less heat from the engine if any. Most of the air it gets is from the opening at the bottom of the car in front of the wheel. There's little to no chance it will pick up water. It's high enough up and completely shielded from any splashing.
I recently installed a ScangaugeII and it has been indicating the air intake temp has been approximately what the ambient air temperature has been. You can't get cooler than that without help.
I've only seen pics of the "cold air intakes" and they all have lots of extra piping and the air filter is still in the engine bay very close to the engine. I can't see how the air would be much cooler in there.

The '06 intake also has a charcoal filter between the normal filter and the engine, meaning that you'll technically be illegal in california if you install an aftermarket intake. I rather suspect that any aftermarket intake having a carb number would pass scrutiny, however...

I'm pretty sure that this works both ways but. For the honda's, cold air intakes and 4 into 1 headers produce higher rpm power, best for vtec engines. As for short ram intakes and 4 into 2 into 1 headers, they tend to produce more low end to mid-range power.
I have an 06 xB and will soon decide on an intake. I would prefer the short ram for mid-range usable power since I've got an automatic and it's our family car, the mid-range power is what I prefer. But since I'm a tech myself, I understand the warranty issues and might just stick with the stock CAI offered by toyota.
