Default High RPMs at interstate speeds.

I recently bought my 05 xB and drive it back and forth to work via the interstate. It's a five speed, and at about 80 mph, the thing tachs to 4k rpm. Does anyone elses' do this, or do I need to get this checked out. There doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between 4th and 5th gears. Somebody let me know. Thanks.

Nope, this is just how they are geared, I have a 2004 5spd xA. I figure its 50pm/1mph, so 3500rpm at 70mph, 4k at 80mph, you get the idea. Yeah these things need more of an overdrive or a 6th gear.

Make fun of the gearing all you want- its what makes the xB/xA quicker off the line!

they're faster than the lighter echo siblings.

I "wish" the gearing was the same as the autos, in as far as spinning at 3200 at 80, rather than 4000..

Make that 5th gear overdrive..

Everywhere I read online, it says that overdrive is standard with manual xB's and an option with autos.

it is standard on both manual and automatics. on an auto you can push a button disabling the overdrive.

I got both xB's- and prefer the auto for long drives just so I don't have to listen to the motor scream itself to an early grave. The auto, although 'slower', is a better driver with the lower RPM's.

Gear ratios mean crap to me on THIS vehicle - I want ed function - not fun. If I want fun there are a few in the garage with 5x the HP and a better rearend.

-- gotta 6spd 'round the shop somewhere now. when I get slowed up a little and properly motivated I may prove a whole bunch of people wrong (again) and put it in.

good luck with that. i would hope it'll be attached to a worthwhile motor......

anything can fit it all depends on how much subframe and body you want to cut to get it to fit....

5x the horsepower would be fun . guess an xb is an awesome daily tho. it just sucks when it's yer only lol.

umm...turning off overdrive doesnt give you an extra kick, it just eliminates the last gear, making the 5 speed auto a 4 speed auto

The reason its called overdrive and not 4th gear is that typically the high gear is a 1:1 ratio and overdrive is anything less than 1. As per aychse7en's chart, you can see that 3rd gear is the 1:1 gear and 4th being "overdrive" is actually way less (0.7) than 1:1 and a higher ratio then even 5th (0.815) on the manual. Im pretty sure I have hit that highest-sustainable speed in overdrive in the auto (103).. I havent taken my car up past 90 in 3rd and it doesnt really feel like I could if I wanted to.
