Default HONEST NOS NITROUS POWER IN AN XB and forced insuction

I have been all over this forum trying to find accurate info on a nitrous system-it always seems to end up with one serious guy and then someone who spends less than $500 and ended up with 200 hp and then the thread ends up about how ridiculous that guy is (whish he is)

Anydody actually using a NOS system with actual hp (or how different it feels driving with it)?

Can anybody that actually knows tell me what they know about this vs a turbo or supercharger set-up?

I don't have NOS, nor am I an expert. I am looking to add it for supercharged application in the near future, so I'll be watching this thread as well. From my understanding, HP gain is easily calculated by volume flow. I believe the maximum ammount you would want to run is a ~50 shot, there will be a notable difference when it kicks in, but will be RPM limited so it will only make power in the top end, not off the line or in normal driving conditions.

I will be adding a 20 shot on top of the supercharger to supplement high end torque, my torque curve currently peaks at 4250 RPM with the supercharger. Call PTuning if you want answers from a reputible shop, they also have a kit on their website for the xB and have ran nitrous on xA's and xB's, though I think they were all turboed or supercharged.

I would like to know to, lets say how much faster a xb with I/H/E/NOS(50 shot) does vs a Turbo or supercharger

i have a 35 dry shot on my box with i/e/h/p and im not sure how it compares to turbo or a s/c but it pulls friggin hard, i will squeel the tires through first, and shifting into second when the bottle is full, and its an autoatic hahaha. i have the nytrex kit, great price and quality. you can hit it once you 2500 rp, but i wait till about 3, but once you hit it, you have to shift immediatly, be ready for it lol, since im an auto ill put it in first, hit it, and shift right away cuz it revs that quick, the tranny has a lil trouble shiftin that quick, nothin detramentle tho, just a lil slow, but nocks seconds off 0-60 time, just the 35 hits hard. ive heard the our motors can handle a 50 wet, but its not recomended, go wit a 45, or 40 its safer, but some people are runnin 50's fine, just how cautious you are i guess.

So you're manually shifting an A/T?

ya i am, i usualy do anyway, but its a must so you can have it in the gear you want wen you nail it, so that you dant nail the throttle and then it has to downshift once or afew times cuz youd lose some time, and i think it can hurt things doin that. its fun to shift auto's and that way if you need to move, or go quickly for some reason, your in the gear thatll move you quickest, none of this in 4th, or D when 20 and when you hit the gas it taking like 5 sec to shift before you go anywhere lol.

It's been a few months since I asked this to start this thread-any longer term reports on how the nitrous is holding up or any dynos?

So now I am getting more interested in this again-got i/h/e on my xB and went and drove a 2007 GTi yesterday and DANG-that car was fast and very cool (have always loved VWs) but I still like mine a lot.

So xB weighs 800 pounds less and 1/2 as much hp-so with a nitrous kit maybe similarly as fast-maybe not but closer.

I am having a hard time finding the nytrex kit anywahere for sale though. Anybody have any hook up ideas-I am still a ways away from getting one but just want to start planning.

i would just go with NOS system. zex is a lil pricy but good, and so is ny-trex, i got mine cheap through a hook up, but i havent heard from him at all since then. but the site is ny-trex.com but a good nos efi 4 cyl system will work wonders. my 35 dry shot runs super rich, about 11.2:1 afr or so, so ima bump it up to a 40, im feeling the hp itch haha.

How hard/easy was it to install the NOS kit? Any problems at all (ecu, weird leaks, engine running strange)?

um the kit itself was fairly easy to install, it took me about half a day, but most of that was trying to position the WOT switch correctly, that was a pain! i recentlly ended up going to pep boys and buying an older gen cars floorboard horn button, its round and fairly flat and is a momentary delay too so i put it outa sight under the dash where the metal bar of the pedal meets the firewall during WOT, its so much more reliable. your car will deal with it fine, but if you run anything lower than 91 itll ping. i forgot i had 87 in and after a about half way through 2nd the computer sensed some knock, and just cut power to motor lol, i let off gave it a few seconds and it was fine. this knock must have been very very light, becuase i could not hear it all. and if your an auto, id suggest better fluid in the trans, the shifts from first to second is sluggish when juicin it. duno why, its like the converter freewheelin and cant catch up lol. best of luck, leme know if you need any more help

to find your required air mass or flow for a given power you need the following: HP multiplied by Estimated Air/Fuel Ratio multiplied by Brake Specific Fuel Consumption Divided by 60 to have an actuate calculation by the minute rather then by the hour.

this would look like this:
HP = *100hp + 50shot or 50hp*
A/F = *lets do 12 just for the example*
BSFC = *normal average for this is usually 0.55*
Divid 0.55 by 60 for minutes rather then hours.
*NOTE: this calculation ONLY works at the crank or Brake Horse Power ratings. drivetrain power lose still needs to be taken into account.*

150BHP x 12.0 A/F x 0.55 BSFC/60 = 16.5lbs/min of flow.
for us, we have about a 15% power lose from the crank to the wheels based on stock wheel+tire diameter and wheel weight. this means power to the wheels would be around aprox 127.5hp +/-5-10% based on atmospheric temps. and conditions. overall aprox a 68% temporary power gain over stock.

this is step one of a 3 step process in finding out what power you want based on F/I application with a Turbo, Supercharger or Nitrous. Nitrous on the other hand only needs step one to figure out what is needed. step two and three are for turbine compressors.
