Default Horsepower increase on a xB, with a $1k limit. Suggestions??

Hey,

I’m new to the forum.

I’m lookin’ to buy a xB within the next month. It’s mostly going to be used as my commuter car, and trips to home depot (little things).

I have no intention of modding the car to race with GTI’s, STI’s, etc. I just want to increase the horsepower so that it can be a little more “punchy” on the freeway (hopefully).

I really don’t want to spend more than a $1,000. Hopefully, the add-ons I will be able to do myself. Any list of suggestions?

Thanks,
HB

p.s. I did a search, and people are mostly interested adding a turbo or supercharger…that’s out of my price range.

Injen SR intake, Exhaust cat or axle, and headers are really the basic bolts on that are safe and can give you some punch. Also if you are getting stick you can get a short shifter.

Turbo's/SC's are the only way to get a big increase--

The 'free' things you can do to make it 'feel' faster are to remove the back seat, the spare tire, and the rear tray/lid stuff.

You got it.

Some have installed ground wire kits and iridium plugs, which help out with smoothing idle and helping throttle response, but little power is gained. On the bright side, both are cheap to do.

Injen short Ram - 150
Espelir Axle-back - 350
Perrin Pulley - 120
DC headers 230
Short Shifter 130
Ground wire 60

This are all the parts i got and planning to get, this will roughtly meet you budget, if and if..you install all yourself and dont have the need to buy tools to install the parts.. the prices are prices i paid for. or the cheapest i found, and their all shipped prices. Im guesstimating ull definitely feel power if u install all the parts at once. and at least a 10% increase in power.. so roughtly 10 little horsies....so ur paying 100 per horse its decent and comparable to turbos, which the average joe cannont install, and usually would be 4000k at least to buy setup test and install a turbo on the box and ud get 30-50% extra power.

These sound like a great options. Installing these (and maybe a chip), would a xB be pushing close to 130hp? That would be an increase of 22hps from the base model.

Stay away from chips. The other mods are a good choice.

If it's HP you want, don't buy any plugs, ground wires, chips or any other junk. The intake, exhaust, possibly a header, and short shifter will be about it and put the rest into something like audio or appearance mods.

i just have the intake and exhaust on, and itgave me quite an extra puch, when i get my headers, it'll give it a little bit more and if you have an auto and want some *free* punch, turn off overdrive (hehe)

Probably one of the best mods for the money will be a good set of headers. I have just put the DC Sports Headers on and there is an excellent improvement over the stock performance of the vehicle. Not a bad mod for $230.00. Money well spent.

/\/\ i would agree. I noticed this biggest difference in torque from JUST installing the header (Strup here)

The only way to get that muchhp out of these motors it to go FI.

My votes are for K&N cai, Strup Header/Exhaust and a pulley.

I would also suggest looking for the I/H/E trio and then slapping on an underdrive pulley for some added power.
And stay away from cheapo chips, most often they do not promise what is advertized...

Ill tell you what a pulley feels like. The easiest way to immitate how a pulley makes your car feel is to go out and get a couple 50lbs bags of animal food and put them in your car. drive around a bit, then take them out and drive around. Thats what a pulley is going to make your car feel like, except instead of starting from stock and going up, your starting from stock and reducing your weight.

Basically, its like dropping about 100 pounds from your car. You really can "feel" the difference.
