Latest MPG...Something seriously wrong
#81
I am trying an experiment on this tank. I am driving with the OD off (in town only and turn it on when I get over 40-45 MPH) and also am shutting off the traction control (when mostly dry out). so far, I have noticed a little difference...but won't know for sure till I fill up again.
Thanks all for the advice and responses...but keep 'em coming! LOL

Some things to consider why your mileage might be sucking.
First, like someone said, with it being cold outside you will use more gas. Colder air = more dense = car using more fuel. Also, make sure you let your car warm up a bit, or at least drive it very gently until it does. On my old 4runner, I averaged 16mpg in warmer weather, 13 in colder weather. Combine that with bigger wheels/tires if you have them and theoretically you could see a 4-5mpg difference.
Secondly, when I first got my xB, I was getting around 260 miles before the fuel light came on. Once I hit 12000 miles I was right around 280. I switched to Synthetic and am consistently hitting 30mpg.

do you let the engine warm up? i say this because in the morning my mom in her prius gets an average of about 7-9 mpg till she gets on the freeway... she has an avg mpg of 37 on her current tank of gas mind u this is a prius! epa 60 city 51 highway! dont worry just pretend u get that mileage and ull be fine!

Just did slightly 0ver 600 miles on a Christmas Holiday trip through lausy weather at speeds mostly in the 75-80 MPH range with a larger than normal load in the car and pulled 31 MPG. Those miles at the far end around town (about 80-90 miles worth) were stop-and go city driving ain unfamiliar territory...
I know my xB can do better in summer and at more reasonable speeds, but considering the conditions I'm sataisfied.
Vanilla performed quite well on the trip.

Ok people...I know I keep rehashing this thread and bringing it back up, but I need help! This is an ongoing thing. My last tank was 22.12 MPG.
I really need some ideas as to what to look at as to the problem. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL.

Duker, your numbers are almost CERTAIN to improve on summer fuel!
23/29 pretty much matches what one can expect in cold weather and with 'winter fuel' used on the shorter, less efficient driving patterns that often happen in winter.
The extra drag from rain/snow, and the engine having to use more energy warming up and staying warm don't help either.

well there is another way to look at it too. Since the EPA uses the same criteria when estimating fuel economy that means all the other MPG estimates are skewed too. So no matter what i am still getting better gas mileage than lower mpg cars regardless.
Factor in that i have Viper security with remote start (i love remote starting my car) and you can see gas being burned up everytime my car is idling in the parking lot. IM happy

I would like to weigh in on this topic...
When I first got my box, I really babied it. I kept my revs between 3000-3500 and I didn't go over 65 MPH. I was getting around 31 MPG (still breaking in). Fast forward to December (after the first oil change) and I am racing around (shifting over 5000 RPM), flying home from work at between 75-80 MPH. I saw my gas mileage drop to 25 MPG!
This week I am trying to go back and granny shift and try to keep my speed around 70 MPH on the highway. I am still on the same tank of gas and at half-full, I already have 200 miles! I should definitely be over 30 MPG...probably close to 35 MPG!!!
I will post again with the results.

I would like to further mention that when calculating your MPG, you should note how much gas you actually put in. I have noticed that a lot of you guys are just assuming that your tank is full and using 11.9 gallons.
What I do is wait until the low level light comes on. I fuel up (in NJ they do it for you, but I always check the pump or my receipt to see exactly how much was added to the tank). Now reset your trip odometer and drive until the light comes on again. The mileage on your trip, divided by the gallons added is your MPG!

Well, you do the math for me....
Gallons-10.297
miles driven-227.8
I came up with 22.12 MPG
This thread was originally started NOT TO COMPLAIN about my mileage, but to get help with a 10 MPG drop in the course of ONE tank. Now it has been several tanks and I can't break 23 MPG with the same style of driving as it was when I bought the car. I don't race, I usually never get over 3500 RPM, clean filter, low miles (15000...I mean low by not needing to take it in for any major services), regular oil changes (actually, I have had it done 5 times now), I don't ride the brake, Etc.
Today I reset the ECU and made sure the tires were the same PSI ( I put them at 36). I am down a little above 3/4 tank and drove 35 miles this tank. I know I can't figure the MPG till I fill up again, but I used to get 75+ miles out of a quarter tank.
BTW...whats up with that NJ law that doesn't allow you to fill up yourself? I thought it was weird the first time I drove through there...LOL.

(And no, I have NO idea why some states seem to think their drivers are too dumb to fuel their own cars...)

By having someone pump the gas for you, it gives them a job.
As Tomas stated , you do not have to be a rocket scientist to pump gas.
it is nice to know that in this day and age , everyone can have a job. At least in Oregon and NJ.

MPG
You will get 32 city IF Your driving is done under 2000 rpm for the COMPLETE TANK of gas....do not use the defroster (it runs the a/c compresser)..... remove the CAI....its doing its job, adding cool air, therefore the computer ads gas to that cool air.
Put mobile 93 in the tank and give it a try, even put the scion 15"wheels back on
you cant change wheels and tires and Air intake and exhaust and ask toyota whats wrong
dont use 87 gas,its for lawnmowers,
Good luck driving without going over 2000 rpm for a full tank
Good luck ,let us know how you did
