Default Leaking Radiator on an xB..

Hello All,

I just found a leak in my radiator. I rear ended a Jeep and his trailer hitch punched into the radiator. From what I can see, there are two rads...or am I wrong?? I can see that the rad has been damaged.

This model was not brought into Canada so I think the Yaris rad will do....

So where can I get a parts catalogue of my 2005. I think I can handle the repair myself.

Timothy

OK I took the front end of the xB apart and the first rad is for the air conditioner. It emptied its contents (pressurized with coolant) and so I am going to assume that its not leaking and can be re-used.

Besides the colour of the liquid that is leaking is the colour of my engine coolant (pink). I had to take off the front fender and then remove the air conditioner radiator. So this is went it all vented.

Also I noticed the engine fan is activated quite quickly (when the engine is getting warm) so I am also going to assume I may have lost enough coolant so that the engine block is getting hot enough to trigger the fan.
If anyone knows where this sensor is please let me know. Also advise me it I am on the right track.

The hose clamps seem pretty heavy duty so ... advice on how to remove them would be appreciated as well. Now the final question, will a Toyota dealer here in Canada have a radiator for this model. Does the Yaris share the same part??

Thanks guys .... need some help.

Timothy

Ask em for an Echo rad... should be the same thing...

As for the hose clamps, I replaced my hoses at the same time, so I dont even remember being gentle with them...

Better off to just replace, and the AC heat exchanger Im not sure what to tell you on, as I havnt touched that part on my car

The fan is triggered off the coolant temp sensor

This is the pic that I was basing that last statement off of...

Well im sure you should be able to get a rad from a dealer but it might be pricey,I would say get a aftermarket one.Try for a nice fluidyne or get a all metal one as the stock ones with plastic and aluminum will start to break after a while.

Thanks ... can you give me a lead where to do to get a "flluidyne" one. Sorry can't see from the picture where the temp sensor is? But do you think I am correct in assuming the reason the fan is coming on is because my coolant is low (after the leak). I guess I need some re-assurance that there is nothing else to replace. I am in there already. I'll try to find the sensor.

Is it on the engine block??

Thanks for the advice. It is helping alot.

Echo , Yaris rads will work,
Your fan comes on when the temp gets to 195/200 range normal for it to come on and off ( keep the res fill it will get to the parts house)
The temp sensor if I remember is behind the intake on the block , chances are it's ok and working normally ( the fan cycling on/off)
If the rad is leaking you had to go thru the ac condensor , it will need to be replaced/repaired as well.

Go with an aftermarket , if you go to a good radiator shop they can fab one up for you using the damaged one as a template, could be cheaper and quicker than finding one.

You can remove the hose clamps with a pair of hog nose pliers.

Hello Frogbox,

I am not sure I have to replace the AC condenser...when I removed it, I noticed it released all of the coolant gas. It was dented but not leaking since it was pressurized when I removed it.

It was dented but not leaking but the force of the colision, damaged the top of the engine radiator...leaking pink coolant up there. The other poster said the rad is made of plastic so maybe I should find an after market one. Thanks for the advice. I think I can re-use the AC condensor. Timothy

OK found the part from CarAutoparts.com. It was $146 (CAN) which is about 3.5 X less than the cost from a Toyota dealer. I also ordered a bra for my Scion XB 2005 which cost about $60. Cheap way to cover up the imperfections on the bumper. Should take 4-6 days for delivery. Thanks for all the help here guys.
