Simple question here: Does the mpg get worse with the cold air intake ? Could you feel a difference in performance ? Is the sound too loud ?

Sorry for the stupid question, but I always had stock cars and since I got the xB, I started to play a little with modifications, anyway, can you help a beginner ?

My last question, I planning in getting a AEM and take it to a dealer to install, any experience doing that ?

Since nobody else is answering... I haven't put any intakes on my xA yet, but usually...
Cold air intakes help the engine breath better resulting in more power and better gas mileage, usually the same result with an exhaust.
But it depends on the build and type of intake. Some crappier intakes will sometimes cause decrease in power and mpg. Some are tuned to increase power in a certain band and so on. But sticking witha well known manufacture, like AEM, should yield good results. I would do a search on what results people have gotten with similar intakes that you're looking at.

The answer is yes, you will get better mileage, and better throttle response. One little extra, is that the engine sounds healthier. I have had my AEM cold air on for about 5 months and it has been great. I actually realized 45mpg on a road trip right after installing it. I was driving like my grandpa though, just to see how well it would do. hope this helps

really? I thought it would result worst gas mileage b/c more air means more combustion, so more hp. That also means it would burn more fuel therefore cost more fuel. no?

More air would not mean more fuel. There is only so much room in the 1.5 L engine for combustion. The only time you'll use fuel is when you apply throttle... it is INJECTED fuel. forcing more air in, or allowing more air out (exhaust) won't automatically suck out more gas. I've got an Intake coupled with an exhaust in my Celica, and I've gotten great increases in both the feel and sound of power, response, and (if I don't use those 2 things) gas mileage. right now i have the tornado gas saver on my TC and i feel a better pick up but i have no cold air intake all stock motor they say the tornado gives 2 HP it was tested on a dyno

More horse power means you have more fun getting on the gas means lower miles to the gallon. However if you drive like you normally would without the CAI, you will yeild a higher miles per gallon. It's all about how well the ball bearing ankle is greased to let the lead foot hit the floor.

what's the difference between the longer ones, and the short ram intakes? It looks to me like the short rams get the air in quicker.

I have noticed some use a seperate breather for the crank case... is that bad with todays engines?

I was about to ask that myself.
Is K&N a decent brand for an intake? Saw some decent reviews elsewhere for it. Also found one on ebay pretty cheap > http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/05-06...spagenameZWDVW
And does adding an intake like this void any warranties?

There's a mathematic formula for the length and bends of the toobage but I've misplaced it at this time. The results are generally as such: short for low end torqe, long for high end torqe. Use the long with bent tubage for a good medium torqe with a lower wind velocity at the throttle. The short ram will provide more low end torqe at the sacrifice of high end HP and verse vice. The many bends tend to give the airflow a psuedo short ram but restrict the flow a little causing a good medium of horsepower to torqe through the entire band.

You want grunt, get a short ram. with covered housing. The typhoon by K&N does really well from what I've seen.

I wish I knew where that formula was that I put.

But I am a little heavier with the right foot.

Max 37 mpg, on an auto.

well if anyone knows for sure, i'd love it. I'm about ready to purchase either the K&N short ram, or an Option Racing Full length Cold Air, but prefer the low-end power. I'd feel better getting the K&N because I know the name, but not at the loss of low-end power.
