A MUST mod for manual tranny - Redline MT-90
Over the years and owning various cars I've always thought about using Redline MT-90 synthetic transmission oil. I just never got around to trying it until now.
WOW, what an improvement! The difference is felt immediately. The shifter moves much more smoothly and most of the notchy feel is gone.
The cost for this mod is about $50 total if you have a shop install the oil. I got the MT-90 from JSC Speed for $25 shipped so you can save some cash if you DIY.
So why are you still reading this?? Go get it done! :D

I agree. I used Redline gear oil in my Nissan. Nissan required GL-4 which was difficult to find in synthetic. I put in a GL-5 and it was horrible! Eventually I got some MT-90 (had to order online) and shifting was like butter. The Scion manual says we can use either GL-4 or GL-5 (2 quarts), but I'd go with the GL-4 MT-90. From what others told me, a GL-5 will better protect the gears so it's good in a differential. A GL-4 will reduce wear on the synchros in a transmission and make shifting easier.

When i bought my spec stage 2 clutch on ebay the seller sent it to me with 3 quarts of Redline MT-90. I thought it was some crap oil he sent me, but if you say its good, then i just might try it out. I was about to sell the oil on ebay because i was going to use Amps Oil, which is also VERY good. But i guess ill save the money and use the MT-90, thanks, you saved me from making a mistake

I agree. the MT-90 is a great way to improve the shift feel (not to mention the protection of your trans) of your xB. Plus the xB takes exactly 2 quarts of oil so there is a trick to replacing it yourself....... The actual "fill plug" on the trans is on the side and parallel with the ground making it impossible to add fluid without somesort of contraption, this is put here because if u try to overfill it the fluid will just start pouring out of the fill hole and it wont let u overfill it. But since u know the trans oly takes 2 quarts you can do this.....use the factory drain plug on the bottom of the trans....then remove the intake box (if u have an aftermarket intake this might be easier or harder to do)....under the box there is a "reverse" sensor. It will be the only thing with a sensor on it. If u unscrew the sensor you can use a regular funnel to fill exactly 2 bottles (2 quarts) of fluid into.

It is a great trick and it should work for any car that has a reverse sensor that is easier to locate than the fill hole. But just remember to only use a GL-4 lubricant in your scions. Alot of people see GL-5 and think it is a better lubricant, but its not made for our transmissions. GL-5 lubricants are made mostly for hypoid diffs. If u put the GL-5 lube in a transmission with synchros it will DESTROY the syncros. Syncros are made of brass and will be eaten up by GL-5. (MT-90 is a GL-4 fluid)
