Default Perrin pulley installation problem

Hi guys,

I was installing the perrin pully last night. It is a lot harder to install than many people say in this forum. I have to loose two alternator bolts to release the belt. One is easy to remove, the other under the alternator is not. It can be reached but there is no angle to turn it. I have to take to motor mount off and lift the engine up to get some space. After removing it, I have to remove a bolt on release to steering belt. Then, my friend and I put every back and it took us 4 hours to install it.

After I took a test drive. I felt more vibration at stop light (I have an auto tran.). The engine rev. faster but there is no power gain. I also feel more steering vibration. Are this situations happen to anyone? Please give me some advise

the alternator has two bolts.
the one at the top is the only one you should have loosened.
the bottom one is only a piviot bolt (which is a 14mm, should have been able to get this from the front with a box wrench if needed.)
once the top bolt is loose the alt just needs a push to move it.
it seems you did way more work than needed.

as for not feeling more power. this is not a power add on.
it only makes the power you have more useable.

yes, less weight to move around makes it vibrate easier.

the install takes 30 mins. 1hour with pizza and beer.

so, if one day I decide to throw the pulley into my xA I should expect steering wheel vibration?

no. it is most certainly from him jacking up the motor.
if he only undid one motor mount and jacked it up he put stress on the other motor mounts and drive shafts.

I've never felt any vibrations and I've done 3 perrin pulley installs on manual and auto Xb's, and also an XA. You better check your work because something just ain't right there.

You should have asked before hand. It is not that big a deal. As you have already been told, only one Alternator bolt to loosen.

I didn't get any vibration either. You mi8ght want to make sure your belts are tight enough as well. Did you mark the bracket before loosening the Alternator bolt?

Thanks for the comments. I actually first follow the instruction in the tech section, but nothing appears to work like I expected.

I have loosen one alternator bolt on the top, but It won't loosen the belt. All bolt in my car is very tight. The pivot bolt is too tight that the alternator stay there after I remove the first bolt. That's why I have to loosen the second bolt. The steering vibration is not a lot, but I can feel a little difference at high speed. I put a marker on the alternator bolt, but I did not put a marker on steering bolt.

Can any one suggest a way to reduce the steering vibration?

Thank

Default perrin pully install

I had no such problems on the install, ran my car up on ramps, dropped the plastic splash guard for access. The alternator pivot bolt is loosen and then the bolt used for belt tension is loosen. proceed to the power steering pump and loosen the bolt which is accessed by going through the pully sprocket hole, took me a little while to figure out where this one was. Yes the bolts are tight and yes they are difficult to get at, but it can be done without the motor mount being touched. I noticed improved acceleration from dead start and no ill efects at all. go back under the car and check your work, the power steer belt might be loose and therefore cause that funny vibration when your trun the wheel.

guys, the vibration is insignificant but noticable by the driver. The vibration is similar to when you install the intake. Please don't think that it will shake like an old car.

I took my friend for a ride and he didn't noice the vibration. It's not a big problem, but only the driver know. A mechanic suggested me to lift the motor up by an inch just access that pivot bolt, after trying to access it several different ways. Anyway, the car runs fine with better acceleration. It's a good mod, but it is hard to install.

The steeling vibration happens only at high speed above 70mph. It might just need a wheel balance.

well i haven't done the perrin pulley yet still thinking about it for a future mod, but i feel the steering wheel vibration around 80 mph'ish give or take a few mph i'm thinking its the weights on the wheels

Oh geez, it is like 6-7 steps after the car is jacked up and shield is moved out of the way:
1. mark alternator bracket and alternator for alignment
2. Loosen alternator bolt
3. remove pulley bolt
4. pop pulley off
5. put new pulley on belts and pull downward into position
6. put pulley bolt back on
7. Leverage alternator back into position marked and tighten bolt.

15 minutes. Like someone said before, jacking up the car was the hard part.

i know its a slight buzz...this mod can not make it like an old car.
if it did, you would have been screaming.
i could tell mine was installed from the feel, but it was not buzzy or vibrating.

i still cant belive that you had such a hard time putting this in...

and your vibration at speed is most likely a wheel out of balance.
