Its a unit to control your fuel delivery... Help tune your cars air fuel ratios... Some also do ignition timing and vvti timing... It pretty much tricks the stock computer into thinking it needs to add or take away fuel from the mixture.

a piggy back isn't really useful unless you are running forced induction, so i don't think it is worth the money for an n/a engine like yours.
anykind of tuning is very risky, but i am told there are a set of cautious procedures to effectely tune the engine without damaging anything.
