snorkel removal

Basically, get a flat-head screwdriver and you can push one of the tabs down and you'll pull it out. It might take a bit of force. I experimented making a custom intake (it didn't end up working as I had planned). My guess is there wouldn't be much sound difference. Maybe a bit, but not much. The custom intake I made, which was essentially an induction box, made very little noise. Then again, it was kinda hard to hear it over my Espelir JGT500 exhaust.

George,
Just a friendly suggestion here - you may want to read my recent findings about pulling in air into your filter box without the snorkel. Here's the link:

Yes, it will sound "throatier", and it makes your car sound "hip and cool". But, please keep in mind that it's going to pull VERY hot air from directly behind the radiator, and it will get worse when the radiator fan kicks on (especially now that we're in our summer months!) As a compromise, I removed the snorkel and replaced it with a 3" accordian style intake hose w/ clamp that runs behind the d/s headlight, and into the d/s front fenderwell. There's still a little raspy intake sound, but the intake temps are now consistently about 10-15 degrees above ambient.

George,
There's a compromise between better gas mileage and loss of power. Hot air = loss of power due to decreased mass of air. I've read somewhere that for every 10 degree increase, about 1% of your horsepower decreases. By pulling in air 30+degrees above ambient, your horsepower could decrease by 3-4 HP, negating any other mods you may have done or are planning to do. I can almost guarantee you that you'll feel the lagging response once you start pulling in the hot air.
FWIW, the 3" ducting is only $19.99 at AutoZone.
Now if your intent IS to increase your gas mileage, you may want to keep the snorkel on. The restrictive inlet will reduce the mass of air, keep it a bit cooler and still get you a better MPG reading.
I'm currently getting 34-36 MPG with "tempered" driving, and occasionally getting on the throttle.
Again, just offering some humble suggestions and observations.

wow your idea worked well its not louder or faster or w/e but the responce is way better from off the line in normal driving i can rev the car less when coming from a stop and it seems to not mind it usally i would go up to alomost 2K before i would fully release the clutch now im at around 1.5K anyways its a nice mod and a good idea i reccomend it for anyone with a manual
