Unhappy xB Manual Transmission Grinding

I have an 06 Scion xB with the manual transmission and about 63K miles. I have been getting a grinding noise when shifting into 3rd gear. I took it to the Toyota dealer and they want to replace the 3rd gear synchronizer assembly for $1400. I did try swapping out the gear oil for Amsoil synthetic GL-4 but that didn't help.

This seems like an unusual problem for manual transmission cars and I have a few questions.

1) Has anyone else had this problem? If so, did you get the synchronizer replaced? Did you have issues after that was done?
2) I was reading on the tC forum that gear grinding is not unusual on the tC model. See https://www.scionlife.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=140814. Does the xB use the same transmission as the tC?
3) Another shop recommended a used transmission swap from a wrecked vehicle. Is that a better choice?

Any input is appreciated!

I would say that if you can't find a better solution at a better price you can just get a brand new transmission for around that price. Don't take it to the dealer cause they will rape you on labor. Find a transmission shop and ask them what they would recommend. If the dealership wanted to charge you 1400 then other places should do it for around 900-1000.

1)yes but my problem is different than yours. I grind if I shift too fast from 3rd to 4th gear, that is WITH the clutch pedal depressed all the way. And sometimes it won't go into 1st gear (synchros problem)

2)NO tC uses a completely different transmission

3) yes for what the dealer's raping you, a swap is the better choice.

no, if i remember correctly, yaris uses C53 or C54 tranny code. xA uses C150

and back in the day when people here were complaining about the short 5th gear for highway speeds, a few tried to swap in a Yaris tranny and to find out the mounting points were slightly different, just enough to not work. So some wanted to swap Yaris 5th gear insted
