Carputer / CarPC pics *Broadband Friendliest* tC
So about a year ago, close to when I first got my tC, I installed my carputer. It was pretty straight forward except for how to mount things so that they dont wear over time. Im finally posting pictures because I found a growing interest from the ScionLife crowd...
Things you might care about:
- Powerful (enough) computer... Pentium 4 + DVD / CDRW front mount drive.
- DeLorme Navigation
- Lilliput 7inch touchscreen
- USB powered **** for highering and lowering the volume, also for changing songs, and left mouse click (for when I dont feel like using the touchscreen)
- All is connected to an amplifier in order to utilize my car's original speakers
- Total cost ~ 800

that looks like the radio cover door isnt there with the liliput touchscreen.
i like the idea but i want the storage space in the glove compartment.

and how do you like the liliput screen? ive been looking into it, but im skeptical on it's usage.. right now i have a flip up poweracoustik monitor, 7" and the svideo output w/a composite convertor makes the output from the laptop seem somewhat blurry... though ur pic looks good.
on the touchscreen, can you drag the pointer? or is it click/double click only... how about right click?
currently i use a wireless optical mouse
nice install btw!

Very nice setup..Have a few questions:
How are you powering the laptop? Inverter? Shut off/on module connected to the iginition? How are you powering the liliput?
Thanks!

well, the 800 dollars breaks down like this: (keep in mind I got a lot of these things for a good deal)
Lilliput Screen ~220 (from Mp3car.com)
Volume Ctrl **** ~50 (from a MAC store)
Laptop w/ no screen ~300 (eBay)
Navigation Software + Antenna ~120 (microcenter)
Amp ~100 (got at a friends local shop- installed)
Power Inverter ~60 (circuit city, I didnt skip on this one, yes you can get them cheaper)
To answer some questions:
The **** is hooked up using regular USB... I ran the wirearound the center console (which comes apart so easily w/out unscrewing in the tC)... I mounted it using crazy glue
The lilliput screen is great, I also had a regular flip up Sony screen before the lilliput which was fuzzy... the reason is simply because it wasnt designed for high resolution computers. The screen has 3 wires coming out of it:
1) A regular VGA screen plug that goes into the laptop
2) A USB plug for the touchscreen (which is added to your computer as if it was a mouse, it drags & drops, and skips around- so its like a regular mouse, but has the ability to jump the cursor to where you touch)
3) A 12v plug for in-car use... I basically spliced the cig. lighter in the front and hid the second cig lighter I installed under the center console... took five minutes!!!

Was the Lilliput very hard to get to fit in the radio compartment. I am planning on doing a carputer setup this winter when I am trapped inside on a snowy weekend. Did you have to modify the screen or housing at all in order to get a secure fit while allowing the tC radio door to still close? Thanks for the help and I like the setup.

Great job, and i like the keyboard idea, i need to do something similar with my xB like that and an overhead light.
I like the volume know too, but man, can you really stand to use WMP10 all the time? Have you ever tried any other front-ends? I use FrodoPlayer and it's so much better then trying to hit buttons on WMP10! Check into the software on mp3car's forums if you haven't.
I'm enjoying my liliput as well, i need to mold it in tho

Very nice! Looks like I might be getting me a carputer sooner than I'd thought! I'm curious about the specs on the PC though - I'm a gamer, so tend to max-out specs that I don't really need to for a car. How much RAM, what speed CPU, and what kind of Sound Card do you have on that thing?

To fit the screen, I had to use the square bracket that surrounded the original head unit... I just drilled a tiny hole and sent a screw thru that heald the screen from the bottom (the screen already had a pre-drilled hole) then I pushed the screen upwards into the bracket for a snug fit... (and I padded it to avoid damage from a car's regular shaking and vibrations)
The tC radio door had to be chopped up... and I only use it to hide my screen when I park overnight
