I'm pl23st0ns brother.

LEDs?? well it all depends.. how many leds.. how you wire them.. voltage of the leds (max) and voltage your wiring to. I'm guessing since it's the car its 12v. most leds (good ones) can run fine on 3v, so if you wire 4 leds that work on 3v to 12v.. theyll all run fine, no resistor. check this out if you don't know much about LEDs or anything like that.. http://www.casemodgod.com/cmg/Modding101-story--2.html

Okay, I have a question. I did the cupholders in my xA back in December (see first few pages in this thread). Anyhow, we just got my wife a new xB RS2 and I want to do the same to it. The problem is, it's an auotmatic trans. I haven't tried it yet, but how do you get the center console up over the auto shifter? Does that trim around the base just snap up? Also, from what I've read here, it sounds like the plug I used in my manual xA might not be available in her auto xB.....is that right? HELP!!!!

Default Lighted cup holder

Hey there,

I read through the thread and this sounds pretty simple to do but......
Matt_a asked about installing the lights in an automatic but I didn't see a reply.
Is there a web site link that would have the step-by-step instructions on how
to do this on an auto XA?

Thanks.

Default Still no info on the AT Xa???

I tried this on my auto XA and the blue plug is actually plugged into the shifter, and powers the shifter lights. SO, how am I supposed to run leds off of that plug?

I just did it in my wife's auto xB. All I did was run the wires in to the back of the plug and tape them off well. You could do a much less ghetto job by using T-taps I guess, but I didn't want to cut or splice anything.

Ok, I just installed this in my Auto xB - here's some pics.

This is where the blue plug is on an automatic xB. As it's plugged in here, the upper left is power and upper right is ground. I installed LEDs into the front 2 and the rear cup holder, so I soldered them all together and then on to the wires going into the plugs. It made for a better connection than trying to fit them all into the back of the plug itself.

Another shot of the plug for reference.

Here's the finished product:

Thanks to TOVE for the tip on this and to everyone else who pitched in with info/pics in this thread. Also, I found the official Toyota Cup Holder Illumination instructions helpful when doing this mod. I grabbed it from http://www.toyotaparts4u.com/installation_manuals.htm

For instance, there are marks on the back inside of the front cup holders illustrating where to drill the holes so the LEDs end up where they would be if you had the dealer do them.

Just did the mod myself after reading this thread (back cup holder as well). I paid $15 for 8 blue LED's, but will probably put the other ones in the door pockets down the road.

Thanks for the tips guys....

You don't need to for this mod. I did it to my xA and xB without soldering anything.

Yeah soldering isn't necessary, you could just as easily cut and splice the wires together, or if you've got a manual you won't have to do any of that, just hook it into the plug since it's not being used.

Just an fyi if anyone is interested in the factory unit. I found it online for about $88. Came in the factory box and took me about 1.5 hours to install. (mostly cutting out the space for the "ILL" switch) Even after reading that I could have saved a bit of money, I am happy with the factory piece. It allows you to switch between all of the color options, has an option to auto switch colors and also has the same option but it fades out /in each color. I am having fun with this option and if you want to find it for sub $100, it is available out there if you look hard enough.

Hmmm... I just had an idea, cuz my brother really doesnt like the look of the led sticking out like that, and its pretty hard to have it not visible. You can shave off the top peice of the led, I might do this for his, have the led pretty far back in there and stick just the extra plastic on the end thru, and dremel sand it off, so it kinda goes with the cup holder. hmmm....
