Default DIY::: xB Rear Seat Multi Drink Holder - Home Made (modded)

Hi,

Since getting my xB last week, I have gathered much info from this site, and I wanted to try and return the favor with something that I have seen as an issue in these forums, that being "Multiple Rear Passenger Drink Holders".

Even with the new Scion armrest I have on order, it only give 1 cup/drink holder for rear passengers. In our home, we need more !!

I just finished making (modding) my own pair from a set of 4 I bought at the local Walmart the other nite. I am going to try to do this as a DIY, altho I am sure some of you will be able to make my basic thing much snappier.

I have pics below. If you try this DIY, please DO NOT CUT YOURSELF !!! Take it easy !

Here we go....

1) Starting with a set of 4 drink holders ($1.96 +/- a few cents) at the local Walmart. Item #05560-1 by BELL Co.

2) I trimmed the original drink holder "clip" off on the vertical support even with the clip shadow as shown in picture #2. I used a small saw, but probably side cutters or strong scissors would work also. BE CAREFUL NOT TO CUT YOURSELF !!

3) Then I opened up the small hole on the vertical support (more like a triangle) by about 1/2 inch in total (1/4 inch on each side) and then adjusted as needed to allow it to fit over the rear seat flip down shopping bag holder hook. To do this I used a 1/4 inch Rat-Tail file as a round saw. I stopped and tested for fit several times during this adjustment.

4) Once I was satisfied that the modded drink holder was fit properly, I repeated the process and made a second one.

5) When I had both modded holder completed, I installed them both, took the final pic, and ran in here to write up this DIY.

I hope this solves a small problem for others and I am hoping it has for us here.

The one drawback with this mod, is that you need to have your rear passengers drink down some of their beverage right away so it won't tend to overflow from the drink holder's position (angle). But I think that is no biggie as compared to having no multi-passenger rear drink holder.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Props for the effort...now, I would sand down the rough edges, and maybe put some cloth around them, you know, to match the cloth in the car...

Then add some spinners to them...

No, really, again, props for the effort...

Dave,

Great effort man!

It's not the prettiest mod out there, but you can rest well knowing your passengers will be well hydrated!

Default follow up...

Hi,

See I knew you guys would have some good suggestions for making these look proper.

I have sanded the edges down some, but this material seems tobe some type of nylon-type stuff that doesn't smooth up so well.

As for it looking ghetto, with 4 kids in our home, yes I am prolly old enuff to be some of your's daddy, sometime you need to first put function over form, and then with sage advice from more experienced modders, add the form in the "New & Improved Version".

So, what types of things make something not so ghetto ?? like Matching (or close match) materials / fabric ??

Thanks for the input.

I've been thinking about the same thing but i didn't like the bell cupholders... the neoprene catch-all bags might look better... (but harder to do since they would wobble on the hooks, and can't hold large drinks)

I was just thinking maybe velcro or double stick tape one of those adjustable cupholder sets to the back of the center divider...

as far as sanding goes, I would think it wouldn't work that well, but taking a lighter to the edges would smooth it up with the quickness, no promises on staying the same color, or smelling good, but it'd be smooth.

i think if you have more off a solid look then that thing hanging would look nicer..
i.e. somthing like a car seat cover.. that provide support for the cupholder...

and that pic was childish... sorry if i influence every1 to bash on him.. didnt mean to start a joke..

I solved the problem of no rear drink holders before I even got the box... by allowing NO drinks in the car.

umm he has then on the door... there are four cupholders if you look at the pics... I assume one for each kid... one cupholder is not in view...

BTW... which armrest is that? that is HOT.. l held off on putting in rear cupholders precisely to see what I could do if I got an armrest... but seeing as there is one built in... is that the boomerang?
