Default Dying pillars, visors, headliner?

This weekend me and mike (blangkang) were planning on painting our pillars, visors, and headliners black with Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric Coating (http://www.duplicolor.com/products/vinyl.html).

This seemed like a pretty good idea until I ran across this thread by candyaddict (https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...ght=vht+visors).

canyaddict differentiates between vinyl dye and vinyl coating in this post

You don't want to coat it, you want to DYE it. I used to be able to find the vinyl dye at auto parts stores, but I can't any more. All they have is vinyl COATING. I have been buying VHT from Amazon recently:
http://vhtdye.notlong.com/
and it works great.

VHT Penetrating Color Dye for vinyl and carpeting is a one-step process that restores or changes the color of vinyl or short nap carpeting found in today's boats, watercraft and automobiles.

It is ideal for use on stiff or pliable vinyl, simulated leather and plastic. VHT Penetrating Color Dye is not a paint but a true dye which permanently changes the color of the substrate.

It is extremely resistant to cracking or fading. Ideal for use on auto interiors, motor-cycle seats, boat interiors, snowmobiles, personal watercraft, household and office furniture.
To reiterate: you want DYE, not coating. If it doesn't say DYE, it's not the right stuff! Coating can come off, dye won't.

Brian
So now I'm thinking it would be better to use the VHT Satin Black Dye instead. I have seen pics on here and on clubxb of black coated headliners/pillars and they all look pretty good imho. But one thing that I noticed is that people who use the black coating don't use it on their seatbelt brackets (not sure if thats the correct name, but u know what I mean), because presumably it could wear off with use.

Questions:

Could we use the black dye on seatbelt brackets without worrying about wear?
(If so: that's a big ups for VHT Dye and may justify the extra cost per can. If not: Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric would give the same look for less $)

Will the vinyl dye work on the headliner or should we use Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric for the headliner?

Does anyone know where to get VHT Satin Black Dye for cheap?
(I found it at summitracing 8.95/can)

Does anyone have experience with VHT Dye? I'd really like to hear from you.

And lastly:
How many cans of this stuff would be needed to dye the pillars, visors, sb brackets, and headliner (or if you can't use it for the headliner than jsut the pillars, visors and brackets)? [keep in mind we're planning on dying/painting 2 gen-1 xb's]

PS: I know that wrapping the pillars and headliner looks sweet, but I don't wanna see any posts about how we should just ditch the paint idea and wrap the pillars/headliner. I just want some advice about vinyl dying and/or duplicolor coating.

Thanks

-Matt

I just did my headliner and visors with the duplicolor and they look great. It took me about 5 cans to get the color I wanted on the headliner and its pretty dark but I have heard some people have used 8 cans. As far as the pillars go, I just sanded them with 1600 git sandpaper, washed and dried them and then painted with one coat flat black let it dry for an hour, then some clear coat wait another 30 minutes and then one more coat of flat black. It's not bulletproof but it holds up pretty well, and I like the idea of being able to sand it off if I change my mind later I imagine you'd have a hard time doing that if they were dyed.

I painted my pillars/rearview and grab handles.
I used the duplicolor dye on the headliner and visors. It's holding up great! No wear whatsoever, I did this back in September, I believe.

Oh and I didn't sand the pillars, I wanted to keep the OEM texture.

@ burstaneurysm:

I've seen the interior pics of your car before, and it still looks fabulous.

Actually thats what made me want to do the pillars and headliner in the first place.

Do you remember how many cans you used altogether?

@ tuckerdwz2025

Soo you used 5 cans total? or 5 cans on just the headliner? Do you have any pics of your interior?

Just to clarify - burstaneurysm used the duplicolor vinyl & fabric coating. So his pillars, headliner, visors, and rearview are painted, not dyed.

It does look great though!

Also, it's important to note that the headliner isn't really fabric, but rather a synthetic fiber... I'm not sure if the dye will properly penetrate the fiber.

did you actually spray/dye your headliner or did you just rewrap it in black?

Oh yea, absolutely. I was mostly interiorless for a week. That spray needs a bit of time to air out.
