Stock xB needed 1-1/2" spacers (2 x 3/4" MDF) to fit.

There was a fair amount of space behind the plastic door panel to space out away from the metal door panel, however.

I figure I can get maybe an extra 1/4" by sanding down the ring on the plastic panel, but I doubt I'll get 1-1/2" out of it.. I don't want to cut the door panel, so I'm fairly limited (unless I never roll my windows down).

tanakasan -

why did you switch from the 6000 to the 6500? Was there a big difference in sound quality?

Great write-up, thanks!

I'd love to get the specs to make these spacers if you still have them!

Thanks for the props!

I went to the 6500s because of the power handling increase. The nine.2x outputs 200 wrms/channel @4 ohm so the 6500s have a better chance of surviving!

Difference in sound...hmm, yeah, but *twice* as good as the 6000's? No. They DO sound better-more pronounced mids/vocals, more midbass, more volume.

I still prefer the Vifa tweeters over the ones included in the 6000 and 6500 set . The setup sounds pretty good to me.

Of course, a 125 sq/ft eDead session since the 6000s helps greatly too. It really helps your system's sound and quiets the noisy "box" down. Definitely do your front doors. Major benefits. I wonder sometimes how the 6000s would have sounded in the same setting. Check my profile for pics.

Those 6000s are a steal!

ffejeroni-PM your address-I can send you the paper templates.

How are the aluminum straps that you mounted the amps on actually secured to the vehicle? I am thinking of a similar setup and wanted to know how you did that? Thanks. Mark

Which tweeters are you talking about? Link takes you to a page full of drivers!

I used the hook side of 2" wide sticky back industrial (blue lettered backing) velcro on the bottom (nine.1) amp. Its around 144 sq/in of area! It sticks really hard to the carpet, takes a BUNCH of effort to dislodge the amps. Plus, in an accident, the amps cannot go anywhere. The seats have to come out to remove the stacked pair. As a plus, the "blocked" air vent blows cold air on the sub amp when the A/C is on.

How do those kicks sound?

I have the D27TG45. Silk dome, lots of power handling and can operate real low-for a tweeter-with an Fs of 650 hz. I have them on the eDi 6500 x-overs @ 0dB.

That's an excellent idea with the velcro. If you're asking about how my kickpanel enclosures sound, I can't remember. I ran in to a mishap with my amplifier so they are currently on the shelf at about 90% completed. I just need to vinyl them and make some grilles. I may entertain the thought of selling them (with speakers) if someone will send me their factory kicks in the deal. Mark

Its really hard to take the amps up off the carpet. That much velcro is a bear!

Yeah, I was interested to hear if the kicks were a major upgrade in SQ or imaging. Always nice to see a DIY come to completion!

Hope the kicks come off the shelf soon and your amp issue gets resolved.

Nice install! Not to thread jack, but just had a question that stemed from reading this thread.

In the near future I want to change out the stock front speakers, but want them to sit so the grill of the replacements take the place of the stock grill cover. Would this be done in the same fashion as this install? Cut the factory grill out of the door panel, and use mdf spacers to push the speaker out so the grill sits flush with door panel.

Mr_Purple.

For a speaker mounted on the MDF spacers, it would be tough to exactly line up the factory grille/door panel to the speaker. Either you would be off center, too far in/out or end up with a large gap.

I did see an install here that used the stock grilles. Looked like the speakers were mounted on the door panels (through the stock grill area) with the grilles mounted to them. Looked good, might want to search further. Only downside is that the speakers are not sealed in the back so sound quality will suffer.

Any particular reason for not hiding behind the stock panel?

Good lock with your install!

It's just cosmetic reasons. I like the how it looks mounted outsied the panel when done right. I jacked this pic from club xb of an install done by Freqbox as an example. I beleive he's on here too, so hope he doesn't get mad if I use this pic. It's just a nice install though:

I beleive he used a 7" speaker mounted in a baffle, so it covers the door panels speaker hole nicely. I'm new to the whole high tech audio scene, so i just look at installs and try to learn all I can. Is sound effected if mounted in baffles compared to mdf rings?

I remember this install also here on SL...clean!

IIRC, he said he had grilles for the mid & midbass. Not sure if its mounted to the door steel or to the plastic door panel?

Nice custom kick panels!

I believe on the club xb site there's a pic with the door panel off. The speaker was mounted into a birch baffle that was connected to the door steel.
