Default Fiberglass Molding (No 56K) *Updated* 10/21/05

More Fiberglass pictures on the second page... Pictures from 10/20/05

OLD POST:
I figured I'd try to do my first ever fiberglass mold. I bought a fiberglass repair kit and started to think about my first project. Turned out the easiest mold I can make is of the center armrest. So I went to work. I didn't start taking pictures until I was done with the 1st coat of primer.

Keep in mind that this is the first time I’ve ever fabricated something, so it is a bit sloppy, but I’m pleased with that way it turned out, it could have been worse. I’ll get better with more practice.

Premiered

Flash Red Paint

After final clear coat

Ta Da!

Sorry if the pictures are to dark, my camera is really bad and old.

For people who can't see the picture goto http://photobucket.com/albums/b313/r...er884/Armrest/

Just to clarify, it's just a cover, it is easily removable.

Don't work for me either. I think there are some issues with Photobucket. I haven't been able to see ANY picture on their site all week. I think a few others have had the same problems.

So what did you do? Just lay the plastic sheet over it tie it tight and then apply the glass over that and wit for it to dry?

Can't tell from the pix, but it the fibreglass bumpy and uneven or is it smooth and silky?

If it's bumpy anyone got suggestions on how you'd make it smoooooth, is it just a case of sandy like a momma?

Take a 2inch paint brush cut the bristles in half... use it to smooth the resin around and push hard to get everything all flat.

i actually put 2 layers of masking tape on as tight as possible, layed the fiberglass mat as tight as possible, and then i began to apply the resin and hardner mixture. I sanded it by hand as much as possible to get it smooth, the sides and bottom edges gave me alot of trouble because the resin driped all to the sides and hardened into bumps on the surface... but a power sander would have been good to smooth out the sides and bottom edges for a professional look... I didn't have that tool to work with.

A good trick is taking the masking tape doing 2 layers... then waxing the masking tape.... this way the fiberglass wont adere to anything.

Thanx for the advice, i'll try it for next time... But i did get the fiberglass off the masking tape eventually, trouble was the the resin and hardner dripped to the bottom edges and made is way exactly to the bottom side of the edges creating an enclosed cover.

Maybe the whole photobucket thing is a result of the internet war

Two will nter, one will leave.
