Default Guide to Installing Amp and Sub on Factory HU

This has been my first install in like 4 years, so I figured I'd post it for everyones use.

Step 1: Disconnect Battery and run power cable for Amp,
-Some people drill holes and stuff, I'm a bit lazier than that. The XB has a neato liitle rubber plug on the firewall where they pass sthe electrics through, I used that and sealed it later with Silicon and tape. You may wish to slice the grommet, or find some other method that works for you. If you look at you batt terminal connector youl lfind that yo can unscrew it and hook your power line to it with ease
the terminal

The plug

The other side of the plug IE inside you car

Step 2: take stuff off
-Ok now here the fun part take your plastic runners of the side of the vehicle you wish to run the wires ( just pull). This means the thing behind the seat belt too, (if your going over to the passenger side then add the next part) oooh and dont forget that nasty one that is in fron of the drink holder and below the ash tray

Step 3: run your power wire
- pass it over the steering column and electrics then through the small space below the ashtray. You can then pull the carbe up and pass it below the carpet and around to the place where the runners are (this assumes your heading to the passenger side, if not the run it straigh under the carpet untill you are forced to put it into the runners (right by the b pillar)

Step 4: get at your deck
- take off you front cover for the deck and yank yer out by removing the 3 ***** and undoing 2 screws. Just pull from the top. Then undo the 4 screws fro the HU and pull her out.

- once everything is off then you have thes 2 litle plugs from the back of the HU. I used the wiring diagram from this very site to wire my PAC line out converter into it. If you have never done this its can be kinda intimidating. Just remember to wire it to the left and right rears and to push your coverter as far back as you can get it into the opening before replacing the HU. Now attach your RCA's and push them through the opening on the left rear side of the space. Now you want to run your remote wire. I attached it to the RADIO SWITCH line cause everything else went all stupid on me (yes it took 3 trys) the only downside to this is that as long as the vehicle is on so is the amp. My other three trys includes the misshaps of using the powere antenna, (shuts off amp after switching to CD), Radio Power (amp NEVER turns off). Run the Remote wire in parralell to your RCa's.

this is my PAC converter and RCAs

Step 5: Run your new happy wires and ground
- run your RCA's and your remote next to your power cord untill you reach you amp. Now find a good spot on your chassis for the ground (I found mine by the right rear passenger seat under the plastic runner). Run the line as nice as you can to the amp.

Step 6: Hook it all UP
- do I really have to explain this?

Step 7: Run your wire to your sub
-ummmm....

Step 8: Reconnect your Battery, put everything back and fire it up.
-yep yo will have to redo your presets. and you will have to set the vehicle type back to XB by holding the SSP button and pressing volume up. You will have to change it from neutral to whatever you like.

Step 9: Tuning
- adjust your bass with the volume either way high or way low to taste.

Step 10: Smile

If you have problems dont blame me or god, just double check your work, and connections. Oh and if I said something retarded up there then just follow the directions in your manuals.

This was created from my install of a P2002 Amp, 10 inch Stage 2 RF woofer

If anyone has anything else to add please do so

A quick safety note: when you run power wire make sure you fuse it at the battery.

Also its best not to run power wire next to RCA cables. The possibility to pick up noise due to interference is greatly increased.

orcrist86: My suggestion is to cut the slit in the grommet. Its not 100% safe to have the power wire resting next to the end of bare metal (even if you silconed it). The vibration while driving can easily cut through the insulation of the power wire and cause a short. Id hate to see your xB burn to the ground.

good, call on the gromet, I have a piece of miscelaneous tuperware crap shoved there now. The thing about the power and RCA's is also true, but I'm less concerned about power noise than nice and neat.
-Note for audiophiles always run power and signal seperate and make sure all grounds are within ft (less is better). Proper use of shielded cables is also recommended.

Well done orcrist86! This should definitely be a sticky. I just got my two 10" subs this weekend, and have been wondering if I'll be able to do the install myself. Being an audiophile and having done custom installation before, you've just bumped my confidence even higher... thanks!

I'll be building a custom box for one of the subs to go in the back of my xB. I've seen the AudioFormz enclosures:

https://www.scionlife.com/parts/revi...&sub_cat_id=35

... and I'd like to do something like that - without spending the dinero. Does anyone have schematics or suggestions about how I can do a custom enclosure that is a "space saver"? I have to have room for my dog to ride back there...

when you use converters to convert to rca outputs, do you have to use 2 of them if you were going to hook up a 4 channal amp? and all you need in one for a mono amp, right?

depends on what you want. . . if you want the easy route, you could get RCA splitters and hook 2 sets of RCA's to one converter. . . or you could do two independent ones so you can maintain a front to rear fade.

doesn't that way weaken the signal in a way, or does it matter?

very nice tutorial! But another safety note: when running the power wire through the firewall, instead of going around the rubber grommet, you should go through the grommet. Just poke a hole through the grommet, and feed the wire through.

This is an awesome tutorial!

One stupid question though...

Do Line output converters (loc) take away existing speaker channels?

For example, if I wanted to add a sub, I would connect the LOC to the rear speaker channels, right?

Would I then no longer have rear speakers?

I really want to add an amp and sub, but not lose any existing sound...

If I would lose the rears, then this is a bad solution for me. Is there any other way, or would I have re-wire everything?

^^^^^

No, it does not take the signal away from the rear speakers, you are just tapping into the signal, but you want to tap into an unamplified source (if your rear speakers are amplified, tap into the speakers before the amplifier). Although ideally, you would want independent outputs from the head unit.

Thanks whiteblazer

Right now, I have the stock system, so I don't believe anything is amplified.

So this doesn't effect the sound of the rear's at all? Wouldn't tapping into the system reduce the quality of the signal getting to the speaker?

Your stock system puts out about 35 Watts max (15 Watts RMS). There is not much to take away from with a stock system. You'll be fine.

This guide helped alot!! Thanks!! I do have a question though. I installed my LOC in the back so all of my amp wires are behind the back seats except for the power. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good place tap into for the remote lead wire near the back of the car? Otherwise, is there a fuse in the fusebox that I could tap into? Any suggestions would be great!!

orcrist86 - do you have specific wiring information on connecting the LOC to the HU harness? did you just tap in, or did you use an intermediary harness like a scosche tao2? which wires did you tap for which?
