Had an overhead flip down and dvd installed...mixed feelings
Okay, Frys had a 7" Blaupunkt overhead flip down and dvd player on sale for 299.00 so I got it and had it installed the same day. I think the 7" is perfect for back seat viewing and the kids are going to love it. The installation of the overhead unit was done very nicely; they replaced the interieor light unit. Very nice and secure.
Here's my gripe. The dvd player was mounted under the front passenger seat. I thought it would be nice to have it mounted in the dash cubby, but the dvd player has a slide out tray that would be blocked by the cubby door. Also, the dvd player is rather long, which would have measnt a more extensive chop-job of the cubby. So................the player was mounted on the floor under the passenger seat. Well, it looks kind of cheesy, like it was just thrown on the floor. It also look rather fragile and easyily stepped on. So......I got this metal paper tray thing from office depot and it offers some protection.
I'm thinking now, maybe I should have it mounted in the cuby some how, but I'm thinking is will cost a bundle, or have it mounted on the actuall bottom of the passenger seat. At least it will be more out of the way for better leg room.
Any thooughts or ideas? Anyone else have a similar set up?
But on a better note, The remote controls work great, the audio comes through the stock stereo, and the video is crisp and clear.

I saw that same deal... Just wondering how much you paid for installation?
Anyway, you should be able to reverse the brackets and mount it to the bottom of the seat. However you may need to build a support under there. Fry's may do it, and they may not...?? But it should definitely NOT be on the floor... Especially with kids that will be stepping on it...
Also, I think the DVD player I saw at fry's was WAY too big to fit on the dash, so under the seat would probably be best... Or in the trunk... But that makes changing discs hard.

The DVD player can easily be mounted in the cubby below the climate control *****. If its a slim model. The backside of the cubby will have to be removed and some of the sheet metal back there needs to be bent for it to fit.

Cool replies! Thanks Mates! They charged me $200.00 for the install, which I found out later was a bit too much, but for what they did, I guess they did a good job.
I would really be much cool er to have the player mounted in the cubby. The player I have is the smaller and slimmer of the two made by Blaupunkt. The playrer aspect isn't that big a deal to me, and what I really liked about the package was the monitor. I think it is large enough for the rear passengers to view a movie comfortablely, but when in the slowed position, it is slim enough to not look so unbecoming.
For now, the metal paper tray thing works well. You can step on it without the fear of damaging the player, but it just looks bad.
I think the most logical option would be to mount in under the actual seat, instead of having it on the floor.
But having it in the cubby would be cool. Do they make a player that you can slide the dvd in, that doesn't have a slide out tray?

$200 to install it...thats a good price...not much at all.....
in car audio you get what you pay for....you want a $1 install you get a $1 install
you got a great deal on a name brand product.

Debris, Thats for the comment. That makes me feel better. I have zero experience with car audio stuff. Fry's was actually pretty cool. Everyone was knowledgeable and courteous. The only bad thing was that When I went to Fry's to get it, I didn't make any arrangements as far as someone coming to pick me up while they were doing the install. So I hung out at Fry's for 4 hours. I must have walked up and down eacj isle at least 10 times! Then I ate an over priced salami sandwich at the Fry's cafe. I mostly hung out at the computer dept. checking out the new laptops. They have great deals on refurbished HP desk tops. AMD 64 3.2's with 200gb HD 512 ram and a Geforce for 699.00. I then hung out at the car audio dept and drooled over that Sony overhead unit with built in dvd. It's nice and nicely built, but I think it would be too big for the xb. It would take up all the head room!
Then I went to the home hifi room with the 52" plasma and shelves of speakers and watched Godzilla, the new version. I actually fell asleep on that massage chair for half an hour!
FInally, it was done and took the car home. I didn't tell my wife about it, but she somehow found out today and she was ____ed! She said the last thing we need is the kids watching movies in he car! She said they watch enough tv and videos as it is! Boy was she ____ed!
BCSxB925, Hey! Did you mount it on the floor or under the seat?

Reminds me of how my girlfriend was when I put an exhaust on my car! She hates cars with those "noisy things!" She was ____ed! But she got over it...

i like the moniters the flip down, i wanna get my 2 year old a moniter, but its so high the roof i mean i think it might hurt his neck. he wants to watch elmo dvds lol. so i was thinking i would just get the two headrest monitors like on mp3playerstore.com for 329 then just get one of their dvd players as well since they have rca hook ups. but with that, where does it get power from> not the cig lighter right??? anyways nice install on that i might check out frys as well. and yea the food there is a grip. i want my taxes back so i can get some screens!!

jocdoc! Good to meet a fellow Chiropractor! I practice Gonstead exclusively and was trained by Dr. Richard Gohl of Glendale, CA. P to A or CVA!
The CF mods sound awesome. Can't wait to see some pics.
After a few days of using the DVD and flip down monitor, my feelings are that they are totally cool and having it mounted on the floor isn't all that bad. The metal paper tray does a good job of protecting it and the remote comtrols work without a hitch.
Adamisbomb, If your two year old is in the car seat, the & " should be okay. My 4 year old really likesit a lot, or maybe opt for at least a 10" monitor.
