Default Hard Wiring a Radar Detector

I need a fused source that's hot when ign on. I was looking around the fuse box but saw no extra terminals. Do I have to tap an existing wire? If so, which do you suggest?

You could tap into the acc wire on the radio. It is already fused, but you could put your own in-line fuse if you like.

Or you could set up a relay if you are afraid of taking too much power from the radio (which a radar detector won't).

I forgot to mention, the accessory wire for the radio is gray. If you have an aftermarket radio, you could use the remote out wire (blue/white), or tap into the red accessory wire.

Or just take it off the cigarette light port.

I just chopped the wires, grounded the negitive and put the positive wire in with the fuse. I comes on when I turn on car and cuts off just the same! Keep your cig lighter for your cell phone charger.

^^^ Which fuse are you tapping into?

You can use the cigarette lighter, I didn't suggest it because I don't remember if it is constantly on, or on accessory.

There is a free fuse in the xB that I used. It's the upper right hand fuse. Not occupied by anything just ready to use and it turns on with acc.

That's the way I finally did it. Shoved the wire in with the ACC fuse and grounded to the screw holding the fuse panel. Thanks for all the replies,

Default stab teh left side

stab the left side on the fuse block,,, the right side is the hot side,,, left side is the fused side...

I wrote a DIY on bringing a relay / 30A (300W) worth of power into the cabin - you only need a very small amount for teh detector...
