Default Head unit and multi-channel audio possible?

Are there any solutions out there that would give me a true multi-channel solution? I want to build carputer and one of the components I have selected is a USB Audigy 2NX, which can do up to 7.1 audio, although I will be happy if I can get 4 discreet channels. So far everything I have seen is nothing but stero expanded to the front and rear. I have asked this question at several Best Buy stores and the guys look at me like I am some kind of alien.

Any help would be appreicated.

got a feeling this will reqire alot of rigging. surround sound files are really only available on dvd audio or higher plateau media. i work for a production company and we do some surrond mixing. i think you may have to use a theatre sytem to out put tru multi channel. if there is a deck that can handle this, ive never heard of it,

I did some quick research and it looks like this has been attempted before and their may be some chance you can get it done. but this is a region of technology that won't really be easily avail in cars for a few more years

I just put a Rockford Dolby surround processor in my box along with 6 speakers, 2 tweeters and a sub under the seat.
Dash & rear speakers are the rear channel, doors are front channel. Had no use for the center channel. Decodes FM and CD's nicely. Channel seperation is awesome.

Google
Clarion DVH940 Surround Sound Processor.

There are a handful of surround sound processors.... most will be a 5.1 configuration for the car though...

I love DTS...

OMAC, I'm designing the same project as yours, Carputer and surround sound. Here is what my plans are:
MB899 mobo which has an optical output (any other mobo with output will do fine), Alpine pxa-h600 digital processor and 2 alpine PDX-4.100 amps. The amps are selected because they run cold and can be stacked under the chair.
The pxa-h600 can be found for around $200 as opposed $700 for the pxa-h700/701.
The optical sound from the mobo goes straight into the pxa which allows a lot of tuning in 5.1 with real or simulated center speaker.
For true 7.1 surround sound the Auzen X-meridian 7.1 card will work fine but it will need a powerful processor. With a slow CPU you can use the usb cards.
