kenwood ddx7015 navigation questions
ok-i did a search and found most of the things i had questions about, but there's a couple of things i'm still trying to find out. can i hook up any nav unit to the ddx like something from alpine, pioneer, etc. or do i have to use one of the kenwood knav? is it possibole to hook up a garmin, magellan, or something from a pda and have it display thru the ddx screen? also, for people who have aftermarket speakers in the rear, does it sound good or would i be better off getting another amp just for those rear speakers?

also, what exactly does digital signal processing(DSP) do? on the ddx7015 u can add it, but on the 6017 u can't add it. is that something i'm gonna need or use at some point?

Define: DSP
http://www.intersil.com/digital/glossary.asp
In general, DSP is far different from the DDS, THX, or DTS standards. The latter are forms of audio quality definitions where as the former is the analysis and realtime manipulation through processing. A signal that does not meet the specifications can be manipulated to sound almost as good, if not better. With the right head unit you can also change the phase of speakers, distance of the speakers and the locations within the listening area. DSP is akin to an equalizer but at a "more sophisticated" level.
Hope that helps.
Digital circuits designed to address a broad class of problems in signal reception and analysis that have traditionally been solved using analog components. DSP is rapidly replacing analog signal processing functions where requirements for stability over time and temperature variations are critical. DSP is used to enhance, analyze, filter, modulate, or otherwise manipulate standard real-world functions, such as images, sounds, radar pulses, and other such signals by analyzing and transforming wave-forms (e.g., transmitting data over phone lines via modem). Intersil offers building blocks and special function chips for DSP, including fast multipliers, multiplier accumulators, image processors, histogrammers, and digital filters.

the DDX7015 has a special plaug on the back for connecting the kenwood navigation to the head unit. But the head unit can accept navigation through the video-in RCAs as well. I'm not sure if the kenwwod nav unit sends it video through the special plug or if it uses the plug and the video-in. So it is possible to use nav with the 7015 but it has to be the kenwood nav unit to control it through touchscreen. does that help any?

deathbyc4-that does help alot. i'm gonna probably get the kenwood navigation. as far as the dsp goes, i'm just trying to figure out if i'm ever gonna use the thing. if it's basically something i'll never get around to using, i don't wanna pay extra for it. i can get the 6017 for like at least $100 cheaper than the 7015. the dsp thing isn't even built in-it allows u to add the thing later on. so it's not just that the 6017 is cheaper by $100-if i wanna use the dsp i'll have to buy that unit later on also. the other thing i model i was looking at was the 7017. that's also dsp capable, but more expensive than the 7015.

With all the options you can get, I would go with the 8017 instead of the 6017 or 7017. The 8017 has the DSP built in along with several more features you may want to look at. It will probably be about $100 more than the 7017 but it would be worth it for sure.
