Kicker L7 and AMPS put in w/ stock stereo...Picture updates
I finally got my amps in. PPI 4550 5 Channel class D and Kicker 600.1 class D sub amp into a custom box I made to fit the storage compartment for my Kicker L7. Sounds really good w/ the stock speakers and deck surprisingly. The tech guy suggested that I don't get rid of my stock speaker and see how it sounds since I am not switching the deck. Said it wouldn't be worth it until I do because of sound quality out of stock deck does not justify $500 Morel Separates.
What a difference! The PPI clean power really helped and the L7 w/ the improved amp. The stock speakers are really clean and that L7 with the right power in the box sounds like other guys 12's!
A few tips...make sure your radio is set for XB. Mine was set for an XA it it sucked and made tuning the sub amp almost impossible until I figured out to change it. Use quality class D amps...they do make a difference. MORE IS BETTER if powered correctly.
The box I made is out of 3/4 MDF and fiberglass. Took about 9 hours to make put looks like the stock storage compartment in the back. Worth the effort and fairly easy. I only fiberglassed the bottom and the curves on the sides to fit correctly.

Well I haven't gone that far yet, but I do have a kicker L7 10" and a KX400.1 Amp and it's plenty loud enough. I'm going to install new speakers soon. It sounds good now, but I want better. I like the stock head unit but the preamps built into it create too much distortion at high levels. Currently I have bass dropped down to -5 on the head unit. The sub still hits hard with the remote bass control **** set at less than 1/4 boost

Sub Box Info
I built the box out of 3/4 MDF. Traced the stock cover for the top, and built four sides and glued/screwed them into the top. I then used fleece for the bottom since I needed it to contour to the the un-even sides/depths of the different sides of the box and to the bottom of the floor. (the floor is uneven and not flat) After it hardens I reinforce it with two layers of fiberglass mat and sealed the box with silicone to make sure no air leaks. To shape the front and curves I used a small piece of MDF and Fleece to get the general shape and then used bondo to smooth it all out so it fit perfect. This took me about 10 working hours. If I did it again it would take maybe 8 and look even better. It looks like it's stock though now and over all I would rate it a 7 on looks. Most average shops would do this quality of work. (Sad though for $500; Im a doh doh newbie) The depth of the box is about 6.4 inches...hence the spacer, this sub needs 6.5 depth! Total volume is about .75 cubic feet. Solo Baric subs don't need much air space. You can have the windows rolled up and still really hear/feel the base. Inside it's uncomfortable at full volume. (not thats a bad thing) 600 RMS to the Sub and 65 RMS for each speaker, class D amps. I have heard two 12" speakers not hit this hard, so I am pretty happy with it over all. The Kicker L7 speakers are great for low volume applications and certian types of base.
