mdf speaker ring template
#2
For the front speakers I just asked the local car audio shop (local business, not big box like best Buy) for some 6 1/2" spacer rings and they had some lying around, sold them for $15. I was using MB Quart 6 1/2" at the time, they will fit the hole but just barely, and you'll need to mount them with the spring clips that clip to both sides of the metal.
For the tweeters I had some plexiglass available so I just traced the stock tweeter and cut the board out to that shape, then drilled for the new tweeter mount and screw holes, worked perfectly. MDF will probably be too thick for the tweeter grill covers. Aluminum would also work but is harder to cut.
Without the spacer ring, the window was hitting the back of the speaker when rolled down all the way, not a problem with the ring. Also, water does get into the door, once you hook up the wire to the speaker put a little silicone on it to seal out the water, I had one terminal actually rust off before I did this. Fortunately MB Quart gives two terminals per + and -, so there was a spare. I think crutchfield also makes baffles (little rubber cups) to seal the speaker from the door inside.
For my other xB, I'm going all Alpine, modest setup but with a 4 channel and seperate sub amp.
Head Unit: Alpine CDA-105 - $200
Front: Alpine Type S components - $90
Rear: Alpine Type S coaxials - $90
Sub: Alpine Type-R 10" - $110
4-channel amp: Alpine MRP-F300 - $180
Sub amp: Alpine MRP-M500 - $180
Check Sonic Electronix, they seem to have the best prices on audio stuff.

if you've got a spare $30 there's always Elemental Designs. I used them for my sub trim rings because the outer edge would be exposed under the fiberglass and I wanted a true round cut for it.

Why not just measure the distance between rivet holes? It's just a triangle after all. If you can wait until this evening I can also try and scan my factory speaker, that would give you a full-scale template to work with without having to pull the speaker first.

Back doors? Haven't pulled the rear panel, is there even a hole cut for speakers? I know there isn't a grill on the rear door panel. The stock rear speakers are rear quarterpanel, but they tend to get blocked if you add a side-mount sub box. The nice thing is the rear speakers are at least bolted in and not riveted.

yep - rear quarterpanel removal meant taking out the WHOLE back seat, spare tire, storage - everything in the back - looks like this (drivers side):
3 bolts ( 10mm) will take the stock speaker out. The hole behind the speaker isn't round - it is 4" wide by 5" tall. I was going to put a Fosgate 2-way 6 1/2" speaker in there, but it's too big for the hole. Kinda stuck as to how to mount a 6 1/2" back there. I have never worked with fiberglass yet I don't want to pay a local shop a bazillion dollars for something. I DID think of cutting out the 'grill' that is part of the entire quarterpanel - mount the new speaker and grill to THAT, and snap the panel back on. Ghetto?? Yay? Nay? I suck at car stereos

You rock. I've looked for the template before and all I ever find is "pm me for it" or similar, never an actual link to it. Thanks! I made my own when I put my components in, but they were pretty rough looking. Now I need to make a thicker one because the the comps went into kick panels and midbass went in the doors and the window doesn't clear them.
