Default Need Help Deciding On New Subs

so i have a pioneer 760 watt amp (120 rms per channel at 4 ohms x2) with a custom box which measure at .80ish cubic feet per chamber. i'm currently running some eclipse 8ohm subs but they don't hit very hard. sometimes it's perfect, othertimes it's really lacking. so i've narrowed it down to the following 4 subs according to the equipment i have and my budget right now. please tell me which subs you think would sound best. i'm not a bass freak but i'm looking for something more than those 8 ohms could give. thanks in advance.

rockford punch stage 1
pioneer ts-w251r
kicker comp 05c104
JL Audio 10W1V2-4

Is your amp the pioneer gm-5100t/5200t? It should put out about 380w x 1 @ 4 ohm if you have your subs wired in parallel. If you're running one channel to each sub you're not getting the most out of your amp.

Take a look at this diagram: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/support_pages.php?page_id=160

Which eclipse subs do you have? Not familiar with Eclipse 8 ohm subs. If you're running 8ohm to each channel on your amp, you're probably only getting 60-70 watts per sub, which may be why you're not happy with the output.

Try re-wiring your subs, if they're not already configured as such and see if you notice any difference. You may need to look at your amp manual to determine how to wire it bridged mono.

Did a quick search and I'm guessing you have the 86100.8, which is a 8ohm SVC rated at 150w RMS / 300w peak.

Does that sound right?

i'll get the model number for you later tonight. i'm pretty sure the subs handle 200 rms though.

as for the amp, it's a gm 5100t. i have it wired in parallel.

I'm not sure that the subs you listed are going to make you much happier. Eclipse makes some good stuff. Sounds like you have enough power going to them. Perhaps a ported box for them?

My evaluation of the subs you're looking at (purely subjective, so take with a grain of salt):

The RF Stage 1 is a low power handling sub and I doubt you'll get much more output that your Eclipse subs.

The Pioneer TS-W series subs are a definite step down and I wouldn't recommend them.

The Kick Comp subs require more power than what you have with your amp, unless you went with a single 10".

The JL 10W1 would be a good fit (in 8ohm config, not 4 ohm) but your box is a bit too large. Not sure that you'd be gaining much in output, however, in that enclosure. These subs are great in a properly sized ported enclosure and would give you more output.

A few years ago I found myself in a similar position. 2 decent subs and a good amount of power, but I wasn't happy with the output.

I ended up jumping up to a single 12" with higher power handling and was quite happy with the results. I have a single Image Dynamics ID12v3D4 with about 350 watts behind it in a 1.25 cu ft sealed enclosure.

I don't think the 4 options you've listened are going to give you enough improvement over what you have to make the change worthwhile.

You may want to invest in a 12" sub and a new enclosure. Or take your existing subs and put them in a ported box. You'll get a big improvement in output.

Other options I'd recommend...

The elemental designs 13kv2d2 is a steal at $75, and would be a good fit with the output on your 5100t. It would be a vast improvement over the Eclipse subs in output, even though you'd be going from 2 sub to 1.

Or you could try a pair of the Elemental Designs SQ10 ($55 each) but you'd have to eat up some of the volume in your current enclosure. Easy enough by gluing the right sized block of 4x4 on the bottom.

Check out Massive Audio. Look for the CW or RW series.
