first does the sub box have 2 sets of speaker wires going to it or just 1? if it has 2 disconnect one set being careful not to let the bare wires touch each other or a ground, now check if the amp is still going into protection. if yes, reconnect the set and disconnect the other set of speaker wires. does amp go into protection? if no, then sub is bad, if yes, disconnect both sets of speaker wires. does amp still go into protection? if yes you possibly have a bad amp. you can check voltage with a multimeter also to make sure you are getting 12 volts on the power wire of the amp.

another possibility is if the ground was faulty the amp would look for a ground through the rca's which could damage the amp or even the headunit.

i tried disconnecting the speakers and it would stay in protection mode i personally think it is the amp because everytime i turn the car on the subs work for a second or two then the amp goes back into protection i have an appointment with them on friday morning i just want them to give a new amp and take this one back

if possible look into the Kicker amps. they might be a little more money but worth it.

Haven't tried up, but between facing forward or back at the hatch, rear firing sounds louder/better/deeper imho.
