Default Programming the xB Keyless Entry system..

Here are the procedures to manipulate the remote door lock system. As you can see they are hardly difficult programming exercises. Any competent mechanic should be able to do it in 20 minutes including time for paperwork, coffee, sharing a dirty joke with the next guy, and a cigarette break. Competence, in this case, means the ability to read and follow instructions, not even knowing anything about cars.

As with anything, try these at your own risk. If you accidently reprogram your engine to produce 200HP don't blame me!

There are four different modes you can use to program remote door lock functions.

Confirmation mode allows you to check the number of transmitters recorded.
Add mode allows you to add a transmitter without disturbing existing transmitters.
Rewrite mode allows you to replace all existing transmitters with new ones.
Prohibition mode erases all transmitters and turns off the remote door lock function.

Confirmation mode. To check for the number of remotes programmed into the car:

Start with the key out of the car, driver's door open and unlocked.

1.Insert key in ignition and pull out
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and pull out again.
3. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key from the ignition again.
4. Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert the key in the ignition and close the driver's door.
5. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF three times, leaving the key on for one second and off for one second each time.
6. Remove the key from the ignition lock.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves at about 2 second intervals. The number of times that the doors lock is the number of remotes that are programmed into the car. If the car locks/unlocks 5 times, there are no codes registered.

Add mode. To add a remote without disturbing existing remotes:

Start with the key out of the car, driver's door open and unlocked.

1.Insert key in ignition and pull out
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and pull out again.
3. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key from the ignition again.
4. Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert the key in the ignition and close the driver's door.
5. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF, leaving the key on for one second and off for one second.
6. Remove the key from the ignition lock.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves once.

7. Within 40 seconds, press the lock and unlock buttons on the transmitter at the same time and release.
8. Within 3 seconds, press either switch and release.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves once if the registration was successful. They will lock and unlock twice if the registration failed.

9. If you have other remotes to program, go back to step 7 within 40 seconds.
10. Insert the key in the ignition or open a door to complete registration.

Rewrite mode: To erase all remotes and add new ones:

Start with the key out of the car, driver's door open and unlocked.

1.Insert key in ignition and pull out
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and pull out again.
3. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key from the ignition again.
4. Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert the key in the ignition and close the driver's door.
5. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF twice, leaving the key on for one second and off for one second each time.
6. Remove the key from the ignition lock.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves twice, indicating that you are in rewrite mode.

Prohibition mode: To erase all codes and disable wireless door lock function:

Start with the key out of the car, driver's door open and unlocked.

1.Insert key in ignition and pull out
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and pull out again.
3. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key from the ignition again.
4. Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert the key in the ignition and close the driver's door.
5. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF five times, leaving the key on for one second and off for one second each time.
6. Remove the key from the ignition lock.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves 5 times at about 1 second intervals.

I've programmed the remotes for a couple of xB's....it took about 2 min. to do, and I'm far from mechanically inclined. i.e. if I can do it, anyone can.

Early xB buyers were only supplied with one remote. Toyota sent a mailing offering a second remote to these buyers.

If you only got one remote, you are probably elegible for a second remote, but act fast, as the offer ends at the end of this month, AFAIK.

Default Alam quit working...

So here's what happened. I tried reprogramming my remotes so that all doors would unlock by pressing the button once. When I did this it didn't work but now my key Fob's didn't work either. I took the car into the dealership yesterday and told them that it seemed like the fob's needed to be reprogrammed or something and initially they said it was my fault because I added interior lighting THEN after I called them out on that LIE, they looked at it for 2+ hours and said that the ECU was fried and that they would order one. The alarm still works when you lock the doors with the key but the key Fob part is fried... very suspicious.

So, I come here to ScionLife, do a quick search and find that nothing is fried, the Key Fobs just need to be reprogrammed...

I just fixed it and I am going into the dealership tonight to tear them a new one...

when you buy a keyless entry remote directly from toyota they will program for free so why bother doing it yourself.

Because there are many dealers who fall in this category....

I tried to add a remote to my system and it's not working. Does it matter that I've added an aftermarket alarm to my keyless entry system? Also when the instructions say close and open doors should I be lock and unlocking as well. Also the instructions say at one point with key in ignition to go from lock to on to off....what is off position?

Thanks for your time.

I agree, hard to believe that all these steps would actually work!
