Default Rear Backup Camera

So I installed a Rear Backup Camera in the wiper hole. The camera is directly connected to its own monitor. I was thinking rather than have it only come on when my car is in reverse I would like to have it come on when I like.

I figured since the wiper was removed I could tap into the 2 power wires used to move the old rear wiper mechanizm which is controlled by the control on the steering wheel. So when I turn the "rear wiper" on the camera would come on. When i turn the "rear wiper" off the camera would go off.

The wires are white/blue/silver and black/silver. The white I believe is power and black ground. The problem is the camera is powered on no matter when the old "rear wiper" control is powered on or off. Any thoughts on how to accomplish this?

Worse comes to worse I could install a button on the dash to accomplish the same thing but thought using the exsisting controls for the rear wiper would be nice.

Wow its awesome to have a backup camera, where did you get it from any pics? Sorry I have no idea how to slove your problem but a switch on the dash isn't that bad I saw some guys here have switches on the area above the ash tray.

the rear wiper runs on a switched ground ciruit, so when using that, it always has 12v & the ground goes on & off with the switch.

With that being said, RCA video cables are shielded, meaning that they are coaxial & the outer conducter is a ground, meaning that there is always a ground running.

Constant 12v + Constant ground = contstant curcuit, no switch will have anything to do here.

you'll need to run a Switched 12v or use a relay to flip the switched ground to a switched 12v.

hope this helps, good luck with it.

Would it be any different if instead of hooking the rear wiper control switch to my camera if I hooked it to my monitor. The camera would be on constantly I guess but then I could switch the monitor on and off when I would like to see

Its the top diagram. the 12v output is going to go to your camera. The - trigger is going to be the switched ground from the rear wiper switch.

Hey Icon ... where did you get a camera that fits the rear wiper hole?

Is it xB specific or did you have to mod it? Cost?

another idea, instead of hooking up the cig lighter for your power you can use the wire from the wiper switch instead. now you can turn the camera on and off with the rear wiper switch.

just another way.

The prob of getting the camera to turn on and off with the rear wiper switch. When using those wires it stays on constantly no matter if the switch is in the on or off position. Someone above gave a reason for that.

I tried wiring it with a relay like the diagram above and I can't get the camera to even come on. Although maybe I missed something.

using the relay diagram above:

85 would go to the White/Blue wire in the 2 pin plug that the rear wiper plugged into (this wire switches to ground when you turn on the rear wiper switch up front)

86 & 30 go to the other wire in the 2 pin plug (not the white/blue one, can't remember the color wire off the top of my head, black with some kind of stripe?) this wire goes to 12 volts when the ignition is on.

87 goes to you cameras 12 volt wire

the ground wire of your camera just attach to a bolt in the hatch

when you turn your car on then turn your rear wiper on the camera will work.
also make sure the video screen you are using is on the right video input setting, video 1 or video 2 depending on which one you plugged the camera video wire into.

Ok that is probably why then. I wasn't using the black/silver wire of the old wiper. I will give this a try. Thanks

I just thought I would throw a pic of mine up. I put this in about 6 months ago. The way I have it ran is threw a relay switch so I can change it from regular screen to dvd screen to camera. Might sound difficult but really easy..

Hope you like

This may sound like an elementry question, but... what are you guys doing to waterproof these. I found a weather resistant camera that fits into the key whole. I have a LCD to run it too. But my concern is that I'm going to put it in and it will let water in without me realizing it until it's too late. Any input would be great.

The cam I have basically has a rubber ring that helps seal water out. Im sure if you are really concerned you could put some extra rubber sealer around the camera when you install and wipe the excess off.
