Default Rear Hatch Questions

Preemptive Apology - I did search the forum for this topic and have been unable to find anything applicable.

There is a large panel on the interior of the hatch that you can remove and gain access to all the bits and pieces inside the hatch.

Question: Has anyone removed / modified the panel or space behind for the addition of a sub?

For instance, is it theoretically possible to add something like the Infinify Basslink T Powered Subwoofer Enclosure (its thin... 6 1/2" at the deepest) or something similar to the rear hatch?

Obviously there are consideration regarding weight and having to upgrade the lift arms as a possibility.

Anyway, just wondering since there seem to be so many people cramming subs under seats and this just seems like a good way to mount a sub without decreasing the functionality of the xB. I know I'm not the first to think about this, but has anyone actually done it and might have some pictures I / other scion life members could possibly use as a frame of reference?

There's not that much room for a sub back there. There's about a 4" mounting depth, and you wouldn't be able to get enough airspace, unless you came outwards with the subs, and made a fiberglass enclosure.

you would also have to brace the poop out of the hatch. very thin metal coupled with bass equals RATTLE RATTLE RATTLE!

but I would like to see a sub in the hatch. maybe get one of those shallow mount subs and you shouldn't have to build out too much.

not much room.......and the struts would not be able to take the extra weight

This is the only way I would consider it...

First add lots of this...
http://edesignaudio.com/product.php?...pid=25&cur=USD

Then a few of these (once you calculate the hatch volume)...
http://edesignaudio.com/product.php?...pid=32&cur=USD

And then hide one of these guys (appropriately chosen to match woofer configuration) under the font seat...
http://edesignaudio.com/category.php?type=amps

Then all you have to do is figure out how to mount the subs up to the hatch and get it completely sealed. And you will definitely want to ditch your rear wiper. And throw some of that eDead on the backside of your license plate as well.

yes, or use the new eD SQ10.....I dont remember what the mounting depth is atm, but its pretty shallow iirc.....

:D

Its doable, but I think comeing out from the hatch and fiberglassing something would be best....then you could fg inside the hatch too and make it all nice and sealed....:D

Just saw this today: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...ght=fiberglass

Concept seems right. Any thoughts on potential bracing needed?

I know this isn't a sub, but it does fall in line with good use of space. Besides, compared to everything else in the box the rear hatch is a bit dull.

2 problems with that I see.
1) running the power and signal wires through the hatch into the cabin will probablly look like crap unless you couls loom or route the wires in a clean way, and a potential water leakage problem if not sealed properly.

2) you would need to replace the hatch struts with more powerful ones to support the weight.

but props to the guy for doing it, or almost doing it.

For those that are lost, the Basslink T is a 10" servo driven sub with two passive radiators. It is the box, so air space is of no consequence. However, getting the wires through would be the problem. It is possible. With enough time you would punch another hole, matching the one on the right side of the hatch, on the left. Buy a solid rubber boot to protect the wires and carefully run them past the window. The struts definately would need to be upgraded as the T isn't exactly light. It would probably do well in the xB, but it's definately not going to produce super bass, but will make a major differance.

Actually, I did the basslink install on the rear hatch earlier this summer.

The only thing I can't figure out is replacing the gas springs that hold the rear hatch up. The 1st picture is with the hatch closed and the 2nd is with my friend holding the hatch open for me when i took the picture.

Maybe this should be a seperate post, but, if anyone has ideas on replacing the springs please let me know. I really need to know the force of the stock springs. If I know that I can figure out the specs of the aftermarket springs I need.

here are the pics

Well, I chose Infinity because I wanted it to sound good ... I chose the basslink because I still wanted to use my cargo area ... mission accomplished at all levels.

I actually had to turn the basslink down to match the rest of my system. I have 2 pair of Infinty Perfect 5.1 components (wish they were 6.1) and they are driven by a single Infinty 4 channel amp (REF7541A). I haven't replaced the stock 6-disc changer yet (why oh why can't they make an aftermarket radio with 6-disc changer). Anyway, I have to turn the bass to (-2), the treble sits at (2) on the Pioneer and the basslink is (from memory) around the halfway mark on the volume ****.

I wish I could say I did this myself, but I had some help form a local installer. They were able to run the wires through the existing conduit to the hatch, BUT, they had to wrap the conduit in electrical tape. Looks decent enough when the hatch is open. With everything else in my XB being black you don't even notice it.

Now if someone could help me with the gas spring problem ... that would be excellent!

thanks!

Thanks for the reply! Your best bet on the shocks would prolly change to an actuator to lift all that weight. You could even have it on remote control.

I expect a linear actuator would be too big to fit between the hatch and body as it has a motor to driver the throw. You could check with Autozone since they usually carry replacement gas struts. Or even McMaster-Carr. Search for it online. Take one of yours off and measure it. Like the body itself, how long it is extended, how long compressed and then match one up with something stronger of the same size.

i tested my hatch and it would only hold a little over 10 pounds i want to make a fiberglass mold to hold a set of 6.5" components i think it would look sweet if done right!
