I have a similar issue with the gas shocks in the rear hatch. Cant even hold up the component speakers I had mounted there. A quick fix was the addition of a mechanism attached to the shock rod that locks it in the open position.

Is this similar to the shock locks found on screen doors? ... kind of a mal-formed washer that goes around the piston rod? I wonder if it would actually hold the weight ... I would probably have to put one on each side.

Thanks and please keep the ideas flowing!!

this is the "lift support lock" I have. Cheap and easy:

or you could use this:

Try to get like a shock stopper to hold it in place.

hehe ... just when you thought it was a dead topic ... over a year later .... and with some changes to my stereo system ... i am working with McMaster-Carr to get the gas springs i need for the rear hatch ...

for those that aren't sure what or why we are talking about this ... I've added about 40lbs to my rear hatch (google Infinity Basslink T) ... I need find the pics of them mounted and get them back in the thread ...

anyway, I'm working with McMaster-Carr on two 80lb gas springs that should do the trick ... recently remounted the Basslink T so I need to re-weigh the hatch one more time to make sure I've got the calculations right ... after that I am trying to make sure that I have the proper threads and mounting brackets ... measure twice cut once and all ...

springs are pretty crazy cheap, ... I will at the very least post pics and specs when it is finally done .... guessing about a month away ...

ok so ... life with kids around the end of the year can slow things down a bit .... anyway .... here's an update ...

I received two 90lb springs from McMaster-Carr ... installed them very easily .... unfortunately the hatch came down like they weren't even there .... so ...

working with a SUSPA engineer now (supplier for McMaster-Carr) ... he's giving me some crazy formula to figure out the correct pressure for the springs ... i'm hoping that I gave him some incorrect measurements ... he says there is nothing they make that will lift the hatch ... going to try to re-measure everything soon and send the data back to the engineer and see what they can come up with ...

... anyway, kind of a downer, but there is still HOPE!!
