Default Upholstering the roof

Looking for any write-ups on how to redo the interior roof on the xB. I want to do it myself if it is not to difficult. Any help is greatly appreciated.

wow ... so would I.... headliner's are easy. There has got to be 10,000 how-to's on Google somewhere.

I wouldn't even want to think what shipping an xB headliner would cost!! It sure as hell aint heavy - but the price for the box size would kick you in the groin.

....did anyone think to maybe check the *cough*TECH*cough**cough* section on THIS site?!?

Don't mean to get off-topic, but does anyone know the exact material the headliner is made of, minus the fabric?

Some kind of wierd fiberglass foam composite.

It's pretty easy. Take it out, use denatured alcohol to take off the stock cloth, let it dry, and spray glue your new cloth on.

Just wondering. I heard it was some sort of fiberglass. Kinda wondering if it was gonna be possible to clean it off and paint it, but if its made of foam too, I would think that it would look like crap... Kinda want to go with a smooth, painted finish.. Might have to actually fiberglass it, huh?

Yeah, you would definitely have to glass that piece if you wanted to paint it and get any kind of finish.

Before you do it, just remember that you'll get crazy amounts of cabin noise.

Pardon my ingorance,but....how exactly do you remove the headliner in say...an xA? I have the Side air-bags(F+R) and dont want to go messing with the pillars untill I know I am safe. All I want to do is put some sort of deadening material just behind my front dome light to stop the bass rattle. Thanks.

unless you whack one of the sensors down inside the door ... they aren't going to go off. if you're still unneccesarily paranoid then unhook the battery and wait about 15 minutes before doing anything - and if you're STILL edgy - go completely OCD about it and hook jumper cables to a ground point on the car and put the other end into a metal bucket full of water (set buck on the ground... duh). - now car is dead AND grounded. -- but if you got that much static buildup where you live ... I'd move if I had any heart problems....

actually you can just glass/fleece over it and use that and paint it

u can glue onto the stock fabric
no need to remove it
i used 3M 8088 spray glue (3 cans)
my fingers hurt now...and the corners sucked
try to find a stretchy fabric, i used crushed velvet and it was a bear to get around corners and into depressions in the headliner

all in all it was a learning experience
something i won't repeat for a few years
just make sure to clean it well and do small sections with the glue and READ DIRECTIONS!!!

i just redid the headliner in my hunting buggie. 91 ranger ext cab. i went to walmart and got some nice mossy oak material and some 3M spray adhesive... looks awesome and only took a total of 16 bucks to do the headliner, visors, and front pillars.

You're going to want to use fabric with some give to it so you can smooth it out over all the curves in the headliner. Suede or faux suede is going to be difficult to work with.

Make sure your spray glue says "accpetable for auto headliners" or something like that on it.

pros (*cough*) use a jiffy steamer in the hard spots to contour the fabric into tough spots and remove wrinkles. Doing tough upholstery without one is like tinting windows without a heat gun. Possible, but a total pain in the donkey.

i chose black crushed velvet so wrinkles would not be terribly noticeable
i tried like h3ll to smooth it out
there may be 2 er 3 in there

i'll post pics of mine tomorrow when i finish it
and installed pics this weekend
i am also doing many of the interior panels
Apillars are done already......

TXBoxdriver and others, how well does the 3M adhesive stick to the stock headliner fabric? I want to re-wrap my headliner with a black fabric, I'm thinking a nice tweed fabric would be nice much like the fabric from the write-up in the tech section.

Also how much fabric would an xA owner need for a rewrap?
