what size speakers drop into the xB?

1. Could any 6.5 speaker fit in the OEM hole (without a speaker spacer) if its magnet didn't hit the window?
2. Is a speaker spacer screwed into the door and then the speaker screwed into the speaker spacer? This would make sense because the spacer would cause the speaker with its tweeter to stick out into the cabin more.
3. I'm assuming that there is room for most any size speaker between it's tweeter and the inside of the xBs OEM grill?
The reason I ask is that the Crutchfield rep recommended 5 1/4" replacements for the doors, their selection of 5 1/4 speakers are not much better than the OEMs.
I plan on keeping the OEM HU for a while so the speakers have to be compatible with the Pioneer HU.

Do spacers come in different thicknesses? For example 2"?
I'll keep checking back to see how/if you resolved the problem.

Anyone use Blaupunkt speakers? I got GTc 652 ( 6.5) in front and GTc 542 (5.25) in the rear 2 way compents and I mounted the Tweeters in the pillar under the seat belt by the back sit. All from Crutchfield.

just curious... i pulled out the 4" dash speakers, and saw a fatty resistor looking thing on the back of the 4''oem speakers. do i need that? without it would they be a lot louder than the front door speakers? what's up? thanks

they don't handle much power and that is 'Choke" so you don not blew them up by playing them full range

Pioneer 6 3/4" 4-way, Model TS-A1781R, Sensitivity 91 db, Freq response 28-30, RMS 2-50, Peak Power 250watts, Mounting depth 2 1/2. Rubber surrounds. (just for the front doors). I'd replace the rear speakers if I could find a pair that had a noticeably deep tight bass than the OEMs without having to change the HU or add an amp.

Kerry

I'm trying to get a sense of the purpose of the speaker spacers.

The spacers keep the magnet from running into the window when the window is rolled down. The window is about 2" behind the door panel. With a 3/4" spacer, pretty much all 5 1/4" speakers and most 6 1/2" speakers will clear. Adding two layers of spacers will indeed put the tweeters further forward, pretty much right up against the door grill. It's not really needed. With my Sony Xplod 6 1/2" speakers I really have plenty of treble and midrange. I have some decent 4" 2 way speakers in the the dash and actually need to tone them down to get a better mix of bass to treble/midrange.
Another poster said this: "When I replaced my dash top tweeters with wide range dual element drivers, I maintained the balance between doors and dash top by adding a 10W, 6.8 ohm resistor in series with each of the new 4 ohm dash top drivers. The 'stage' or 'sound imaging' remained good." I have the resistors and will post again once I've installed them.
The Xplod speakers don't have nearly the bass of some of the higher end speakers. The bass is tight, but I feel like I'd need a subwoofer. Adding sound deadener in the doors made the car a lot quieter. Whatever speakers you choose, definitely invest in some sound deadener. I like it so much I'll do the back doors and the rear hatch as well for more quiet.
I am going to see if I can get 8" speakers in the rear and see how they do. Looks like a lot of work to get the back panels out.
