Yea, this is old news. The shifter is a column shifter at the base of the steering wheel.

5 on the tree - that would be cool! The U.S. cars used to have 3 on the tree.

On the tree might be cool, but it's not made for speed shifting. It's a trip to get used to, when I used to work at a dealership, one of our customers was this lady in her 80's with this sweet original Ford Falcon, except it was a 4-door. I used to drive it sometimes and it doesn't feel natural like todays shifters. I don't think it would be very popular, there's a reason why it's not done anymore...

The front seats are totally different for the Japanese bB model. There is no division, almost like a bench seat, hence it is easy for them to incorporate a center armrest. Guess when they examined the American market, they noticed that we prefer separate bucket seats, a center console, and our transmission lever on the floor.

Another thing I noticed is that the Japanese model has an extra drawer under the front central console. Their cup holder is actually just under the three ventilation ***** (which is our storage compartment), which is a more convenient height than the beverage holders we have on the floor. But for us there isn't enough room on the bottom to pull out a drawer without hitting the drink holders. However I would have liked to see them preserve a compartment down there. Extra storage is always nice to have. Guess they felt that having two storage spaces in the same area would be redundant.

The bB is a diferent car in a lot of ways if you really look at it.There are little differences everywhere. bB does not always = xB. :?

It's a matter of perception. IMHO our xB is 90-95% of their basic bB (esp if you don't count the right hand drive). A lot of the differences we perceive has to do with the additional models and options they have over there. Eventually they will make some of these models and options (such as 4WD and sunroofs) available here as the brand is established.

you guys are silly. if we got those seats you guys would all be complaining that the seats suck. no one is ever happy. don't worry. aftermarket armrests are coming soon. in fact, there are already people custom making them if you are that interested in one.

If you look at this picture of all the seats folded down it doesnt look like there is much room for an armrest.

http://www.forbes.com/2004/02/23/cx_mf_0223test_2.html

Maybe installing one would have restricted the seats from folding in such a manner. It seems toyota has gone out of there way to include many neat options for us all and so if there is no armrest i am sure there is a perfectly good reason. \

Keep on keepin on

Funny thing is, I was informed by Toyota Motor Corp. that the bB & Ist were designed for use as a city car in Japan only but yet they get an armrest. Being most of us have to drive long distance to work or school you would think that the US xA & xB would have a armrest.

if you have hands on the wheel, you don't need an armrest. don't any of you remember driving school? 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock? :D
