Default Coilovers: an informational thread

Suggestions:
- Talk about why, what, how and all the pros and cons of coilovers.
Look at it as a thread where to get noobs like myself conversant with terms and definitions. Nnot only this, but...

-Advanced information For a start let me paste in a bit from Robear Racing's descriptive of Buddy Club coilovers, from
http://www.robearracing.com/pd_buddy_club_n.cfm

-Make this a primer thread full of good data and experienced opinions?
thanks!

(BUDDY CLUB brand coilovers are)
[ 1. Ride-Height Adjustable ]
Vehicle ride height is adjusted independently of spring pre-load.
With other alternatives available on the market today, vehicle ride height is adjusted by reducing or increasing the preload on the coil spring.
This primitive methold leads to inconsistent spring rates that are dependent upon the vehicle ride height.
With any of the Buddy Club suspension components, including the N+ SPEC, vehicle ride height is independent of spring pre-load.
This method ensures that the spring rate is always consistent, no matter how high or low your car is.
In addition, it ensures that the spring is always properly positioned onto the strut and effectively reduces miscellaneous and unnessary noise.
Q: Do Tein Basics have this feature of separately adjustable spring perch so that the preload isn't altered by vehicle height resettings?

This is from the TEIN site:

TEIN Type BASIC damper is for the driver that is seeking high performance with a reasonable price. The Basic damper MSRP starts at $750.00, which includes 4 springs and 4 shocks. Compared to the "sleeve type" coil over, the Type Basic has a more exclusive set up for a better balance of suspension travel and damping force.

* High performance and cost effective.
* Ride Height adjustable.
* New paint coating for rust prevention.
* Pillow ball mounts are optional (on certain applications).
* Exclusive design for USA vehicle specifications.
(only available for the U.S.A Market).
* Available for overhaul.

Contents of damper kit
Height Adjustable shock absorber x4, Main spring x4
Lower spring seat x4, Seat lock x4, Thrust washer x4
Bump rubber x4, Dust cover x4
Hook spanner x2, Instruction manual

Hey, peeps, this is your chance to create article items for a possible sticky.

If you know.. or have questions.. put put the data here.

If you need help composing clear prose.. well! I can help by PM but there are other, much better writers here than myself.. So! make articles fresh, or copy and paste like squirrel just did above and like I do when I find interesting stuff to share and learn from.

thanks again!

Instead of pasting from manufacturers sites, why do people who own coilovers post something like this

PROS:

CONS:

Deciding factor for my purchase:

Include amount of drop, if they have adjustable dampening, etc...

Im not trying to jack your thread, but what a company says about its product isnt always the whole truth. Id rather see owner experience.

Hey Brian, I really don't want this to be "my" thread. I don't even want to conduct it along...

I like your plan suggestion above.

====

HEY Tein owners/experts:

I still don't know whether Tein Basics have separately adjustable spring perch (so the preload doesn't alter with ride height)

On the Tein Basics the ride height front/rear is adjusted by moving the spring perch collars up/down. The two collars get tightened together to keep the perch from rotating itself once the height is achieved.

Front

Rear

There is a faq in the tech section showing a early set of Tein coilovers being installed.

That's a help, Dewmerz. Good pictures, really good.

If anyone has a similarly clear shot of the BuddyClub front strut it will show out what they (Buddy Club) was talking about, re: preload independent of ride height. (Tein doesn't have this small touch)

I'd love to see how BC does that independent preload.

There are only 2 people who have the Buddy Club coilovers for the xB. I believe that was all that were released in the US. I could be wrong though.

Do you need an alignment every time you adjust the hieght? And that rear spring setup doesnt look too safe too me. Is it safe? As far as not popping off ehen you hit a pothole or something?

How much of a drop can be had (on an xB) with coil overs?

I have 2" springs, but I'd like to get another inch lower.

I'm not sure air drop can handle my driving style.

I get my alignment checked when the height is changed just to make sure everything is within specs. After initial installation of the coilvers I waited a little while to let the springs settle in and get the height where I wanted it.

The rear is safe. The picture is showing the spring without the shock installed. Once the shock is installed it is not going to fall out.
