i got the shakes......help please
i got a nail in a tire yesterday so i took my box to the tire shop.while they were fixing the tire asked the guy to please rotate my tires.so he put my rear tires upfront and my front tires on the rear.every thing is fine except now when i get on the freeway at about 55 my stering wheell shakes like heck.it wasnt a problem before.he didnt do anything to re rest of the tires.he just fixed a flat and moves my read tires upfront.so why the shakes?can some one help.and i need realigning or rebalencing ...about what dies that cost? help

sounds like you probably need a rebalance. i work at discount tire and this is a common problem when we just rotate the tires and do not do a rebalance. the price to rebalance shouldnt be that bad. you could just ask them to rebalance the front. that should get rid of the shakes you describe.

Also make sure that when the lug nuts are tightened that they are done in a cross pattern. I put my new rims on and thought they need a balance, after talking with a few friends and the mechanic I worked with they all agreed that I should first try to retorque all the lugs and at worse balance at least the front two tires. Well it's bee two days and I don't get the shakes unless I'm doin 90+mph. . . which as we all know the B will shake anyway. . .lol.
I know that some mechanics/techs when putting the wheels back on will (A) not use a torque wrench (B) Will not use the "cross" method of retightening the lugs (C) Not tighten the lugs at all (D) all of the above. . .
good luck with the shakes! if you are going to retorque the lugs yourself the torque spec is 76ft/lbs.
oh BTW just because you have hubcentric rings doesn't mean that it will be centered all the time, cause I have rode my rims with and without hubcentric rings and I still had the shaking problem.

Rebalance should do it. When the tire was plugged, then that would throw the balance off. On top of that, if the rear tire was the one that was plugged, then it is now on the front which will make the unbalanced tire shake magnified through your steering.

i am a service manager at a tire store this comes up all the time if you do not rotate your tire every 6000 miles.check and see if the tire moved to the front are not choke up if so only to stop is to move or try to check the balance
