Update on my box. I managed to use use the stock bushings on the 5870's (minus the long bushing that's on the dust shield. I mounted the shock onto the car and then jacked up the rear swingarm to compress and lift the shock up; then taking a socket placed the OEM 14mm(?) nut into the socket followed by the new 5870 nut. This allowed me to place my weight on the socket and compress the top bushing enough to get the nut to catch the threads. I had to place the OEM nut in first to act as a spacer to push the 5870 supplied nut out because otherwise the bushing would just hit the socket.
Anyways, it's in and overall I'm very happy. Way smoother than the stock rear shocks!

I know this post was from some time ago, but the directions you have listed here are for the 5870's for the xA or for the xB, or both?

Those shocks will work just as well on either the xA or xB - just remember you will have no bump-stops (that's the big rubber bushing on the gravel shield that is not used) when using the 5870s. The 5870s are NOT designed to work with the Scion/Echo suspension design, the 5987s are.

I'm dropping the xA with Eibach Sportline Springs (2 inch drop hopefully). I've read a decent amount on here from various posts, aren't the 5870's the better choice? Or do I have that backwards? Also, I've been told the KYB Shocks are pretty good as well.

The 5987s are too long to work as designed if the suspension is dropped two inches.

The 5870s are what a lot of folks use in that case.

hate to be a dick but they don't make them with different thread pitches. these are all machined the same way everytime. my guess is you accidentally used the nuts that came with the OEM shocks and that is what stripped the post on the Monroe. still good customer service on their part.

don't get your nuts mixed up folks! the OEM nuts WILL NOT work with the Monroe 5870 shocks.
