i jumped on the SensaTrac bandwagon too
been running them in the rear only for about 3 months
mind you...my box has 54000+ miles on it now
original front struts with Tein S-techs
#5987's from Napa with Tein S-techs

the combination of the worn out fronts and squishy Napa's is much nicer on the highway......but slightly more roll

i have developed a slight clunking noise very occasionally from the rear suspenision
it only happens when the rear beam is articulated oddly or extremely (diagonal over large speed bump..)

ill eventually get the noise....but the highway ride is luxurious.....and still kinda sporty
these shocks and lotsa panel dampning is a nice ride indeed!!

I just ordered a full set to put on our xA from Partsamerica.
use: MLBD as the coupon and get 15% off. My order was $165.35 for fronts and rears shipped plus the $30 off coupon so a whole $135 basically. I guess I'll be spending a lot of time working on the cars this week. S-techs, different pully, bags for my truck and a shift kit for the truck. Hmm I supposed I have to work some time too.

Thing is, on the US model (xB) they went with much stiffer springs and shocks than they used on the JDM (bB) version. The only problem is in the rear: the rear shocks are much too stiff for anything other than a fully loaded vehicle.

Since only the rear shocks are too stiff, just replacing them actually does make sense. Front shocks (struts) are just fine as is.

Installed Monroe shocks on rear. The ride is much better, more so than I expected. A very noticable difference. Thanx the EExa for posting that coupon code, it saved my about $12 from partsamerica.

Alchemist - That is the shorter shock that will fit the xB, the 5870. I have them installed myself. You will not be able to use the previous dust cover and rubber bump stop on these shocks.

Here is an image of the 5870 Monroe shock in relation to the stock KYB shock. The shock body on the 5870 is bigger.

OK .. here is what i have found out thus far. And this is for the part numbered 5987.

AutoPartsGiant.com ... $65.72 ( a pair shipped )

RockAuto.com ... $66.13 ( a pair shipped )

PartsAmerica.com ... $ 68.88 ( a pair shipped )

AutoBarn.com ... $75.85 ( a pair shipped )

Local NAPA ... $75 ( a pair picked up )

Does anyone have any other sources that can beat the lowest price listed? Obviously i would buy them for $65 and have them shipped, rather then pay $75 over the counter.

Looks like that's autopartsgiant.com, with no s. They also add a $3.95 handling charge, bringing the total to $69.67. And PartsAmerica say they'll send 'em to me for $63.98. But won't ship 'em for a week. What's up with that?

Wow .. $4 handling fee? Looks like i will be visiting my local Napa. For $5 i can have them right then and there, and not have to wait. How did you get your price from PartsAmerica.com to go down to $63.98? Do tell. I could wait a week to save $10. They probably need to restock. LOL

I wonder if it's a locality thing. Looks like you're in NJ; I'm in WA. Try putting in 98115 for your zip code and see if you get the lower price.

Default rear end clunk with monroes

I installed the Monroes all around with TRD springs. I had the rear end clunk too over some bumps. After checking with some engineers I found the cause is the shock is designed for full travel only to properly damp. With the lowered springs, it "thinks" it is hitting a bump all the time and firms up. The Monroes seem to be a fine and economical replacement for non-lowered cars, but not a good fit even with the slight drop the TRD's provides.
Also, you should be aware that the Monroe front strus have a lower spring mount than stock so you will have a slight rake in the car when installed.
After 300 miles of bouncy ride and rattles, I replaced the Monroes with Koni's all around. A world of difference. Guys, don't waste your money like I did. If your car is lowered buy shocks designed for the car, don't retrofit from the Echo. Remember the Echo is a much lighter car. It's not Monroes fault that the Echo shocks are not a good fit for our lowered box.

There is no such clunk using the 5870's though, even with springs that have a higher spring rate than the TRD's. Unless someone else has the 5870's can also comment ...

Ahhhhh you guys/gals are killing me. Which is it? The 5870s or the 5987s? There is only one poster who was not impressed at all and replaced all 4 corners with KYB after the Monroe install. LOL

Someone make up my mind ....

Here's my conclusion.

If you're running with no lowering springs (Stock) - Get the 5987.

If you're running with a drop (1-2") - Get the 5870.
