Are you sure cause it makes me nervous messing around with coils i just loosen them and they will come out?
yeah , I've lowered about 50 scions

I cheat and just remove the "big nut" up top while the car is on the ground , then raise the car and remove the bolts holding the strut in , no pressure , pull out the springs , pop your new ones on the strut then install the strut from top to bottom , if the spring is too tall or squishy then install it on the spindle , and use another jack to slowly jack up the lower a arm and position the strut rod into the top hat and then finger tighten the "big nut" and reassemble everything and tighten the big nut once you lower the car back on the wheels.

I've lowered a first gen xB in 20 minutes flat.

that's my all time record though , lol.

cut springs when done rite will and can work PERIOD.

I have been riding on cut springs for about 85,000 miles now.

Have I had probs? yea
any of them scary dangerous and life threating? no.

bouncy? yes at first

I had to weld the springs in place, like stated earlier, the rear spring kept falling out, but ONLY when I jacked the car up, and that was with the stock shocks. After I replaced the rear shocks with shorter ones, it fixed that prob, and fixed the bouncy ride. The back now rides better then stock.
The front was the same. I had to add a spacer at the bottom of the spring to get the spring to sit straight, and welded it all in, and used the echo front struts. This also fixed the bouncy ride.

Do I recommend doing this? eh not really now that their are so many springs out there and the price has come down so much.

My buddy had cut his springs on a honda, and it felt like we were on a roller coaster. It bounched sooooo much that I will never recommend cutting springs. Might as well just do it right.

someone has done so many maybe you do not need it HOWEVER I would encourage most other people to use the spring compressor

We swapped mine today from Goldlines to DF210s. No compressor, we had it done in about 20 minutes as well (although the one guy who was giving me a hand has a record of 16 minutes.)

If you're really concerned about the spring shooting off, lay the strut down parallel to the ground, so when the top hat comes off, it will spring out, not up.

thats cool, I never tried it on the box, I did on a buddy's car once.. it wouldnt travel far enough down to relieve the pressure, then we were in the position of removing a "sprung" strut.. that was scary, and it did pop out at us, but no injuries.. lol

x2 on "big nut" method with no spring compressor. You can utlize the wieght of the vehicle to compress the spring and assemble the new set-up. This saves a ton of time and hassle.
