I have the exact same setup... you need 10mm shims to clear the suspension arm in the rear. Check my link for pix...

Is the 10mm shim required only if you lower it? how bad does it hit it? Driveable for a few days?

Anything in excess of +38 offset you are going to need rear shims for, even if you are not lowered, just to stay safe. No one wants to see a wreck of an awesome scion!
I have +42 offset 18s with 10mm OTG shims and they almost rub (when wheel is turned all the way).

Well I got them on with out the OTGs. It is a TIGHT fit, but it fits. It took one of the wheel weights off the inside, but it is not rubbing now : ), oops! No harm done though, I will just it it rebalanced after I get the spacers. OTGs should be here by friday

This is not true. I'm running +40 with no problem. The stock wheels are a +38. There are people running +42 without problems, too. That's getting towards the top-end of the offesets for xBs, though.

People, people, people...

I don't know how many times this needs to be stated. Offset means absolutely nothing without the wheel width. And in many cases diameter can make a big difference as well.

Unfortunately because of the prevalence of front wheel drive cars, the metric system and common wheel manufacturing techniques offset specifications are way more popular than backspacing. Inside wheel clearance would be way easier for everyone to understand if we all went by backspacing instead.

I will say this. My wife has 18x7.5 wheels with +45 offset. The wheels have never been mounted without OTG spacers, and they never will. Even if they didn't rub, they would be way to close for my comfort. For the record, the backspacing on those wheels would be a hair over 6". So keep your backspacing to about 5.75" or less and you should be safe ON THE INSIDE.

The idea of backspacing isn't very well known to fans of modern cars. Just about all wheel companies use the offset measurement instead of backspacing. None of the major tire retailers use backspacing. Here's a chart I found on a VW forum not too long ago. This will help translate backspacing iinto offset terms.

According to this chart, assuming it's correct, a 6.5" wide wheels with a 38 offset has a 5.25" backspace, which is stock for xBs and xAs.
