Default Help in clearing up spacer confusion

hey there SL, it's been too long.

I'm looking into a set of either 18x8 or 18x7 rims for my '06 box. The owner of the 18x8 suggests spacers (were previously on a box), but I'm not quite sure how much/what type/how much, because I'm new to the world of rims.

SO

The question is do I need spacers for the 18x7, and what type do i need for the 18x8?
He has a set of 20/25mm spacers (doesn't remember what size, they're his old set) and doesn't have studs so I'd have to buy them extra.

Just if you're wondering, here are the links to the rims I'm looking at
(craigslist)

the 18x8

the 18x7 (they are 400, not 700)
http://denver.craigslist.org/for/1565945422.html

Thanks SL!

18X8 or 18x7 will fit fine with no spacers ive ran 18x81/2 with a high offset 40+ and was fine.im now running 17x8 with low offset and only rub when i hit a big bump you should be fine without spacers..the only thing you might need are the bolts i had ti use diffrent one's for my wheels

on the 18x8", I doubt your going to need spacers, unless it's a ridiculously high offset, but the add doesen't say. Even at 8" wide, if they are a +40/+42, they will still be sunk in some. Probably why he was running spacers. I'd ask the offset, and if he was running spacers front, rear, or both.

I believe he just had rear spacers, and I still haven't gotten an email about the offset. I decided to purchase the 20 spacers from him, as well as trd springs w/ struts for cheap. BUT the spacers don't come with studs so where do I go to get screws for 20 spacers?

also, so, the purpose of spacers is to move the tires out from the car and to help avoid rubbing? what I read is that the front's more important then the rear, b/c the rear doesn't usually rub.

and why would someone need to roll their fenders? so you can space the tires more?

Sorry for 20 questions, thanks for the help

a wheel/tire shop will have the longer studs for you. people like to space out the back cause the back is 1" narrower track then the front. they do it to get the rear tires even with the front tires. most people use hub spacers like i sell, instead of wheel spacers/longer studs. they move the whole hub out so there is no excess strain on your wheel bearings.

Rolled fenders lets you go wider and lower without rubbing.

ahh thanks much, that was exactly what i wanted to know. I don't think i'll be rolling the fender, but I didn't really know the purpose of it. Since I'm getting the spacers in the deal for free I'll just go with those, but if i find an issue I'l go to your shop then, thanks for the help! i'll have the shocks/spacers/struts on in march, can't wait!

does anyone know how to put on shocks/struts? i saw a way to put springs on in the tech section, which looked easy, but is it also easy to install the struts? I know this Q is in the wrong section, just trying to avoid making an extra post if it's not necessary.
Thanks, as always.

You won't like the harsh ride that TRD springs offer.
On the rear spacers I hope they are rear hub spacers and not regular wheel spacers that require longer studs as bbzero already stated.

Yep, those are the BAD kind. Plus they aren't hubcentric and place all the weight directly on the studs. Sell them and get some 15mm rear hub spacers from bbszero. I'm sure he can hook you up.

That'd be great, how much do the good kind go for? and I assume they're bad because they put all the weight on the studs, but if they're so bad why would anyone even use them?

here is the spacers. the 10mm are 45.00, 15mm are 55.00, and the 20mm are 60.00. all come with grade 8.8 or 10.9 hardware.

heres a pic, there is camber plates in there also, but you get the idea, it bolts in behind the hub, to bring the whole thing out.

I'm not sure of the offset, so should I just do a 15? or go all the way for a 20.

Thanks for the how-to, I'm definitely going to do these myself. Along with my shocks.

Is there a how-to to install shock/struts?

If he was ok with 20mm, I'd stick with them, unless you want to play it safe, 15mm would probably look good too. Check out the tech section for write ups on shock install. I know I've seem some here or on club cb.

doesn't look too impossible, but what is a spring compressor?

http://www.clubxb.com/forums/f26/how...ers-26743.html
that's how i remove them, just need the other half. The only installs i find are for coilovers.

also, here's a spring how to

You want to follow the second link you posted, on the spring install. A Spring compressor does just that, compresses the spring and takes the load off it. Not necessary at all with our XB's. on the fronts, just lay the strut on the ground and step on the spring to hold it, and if you have air, hit the top nut with the impact till its off. usually you have to give the spring a little tap casue it's still loaded. I've done it with just a ratchet though. Putting it back on, helps to have someone push down on the top hat while you get the nut started. by yourself, a spring compressor would help there. Just follow the write up on here, it's done well, and quite easy.

I'll have my dad and maybe another to help. fantastic, thank you all for the help! I'll be attempting this in march, so I'll post back and let everyone know how it goes. Sounds like it just takes time, patience and the right tools.
What i'll probably do is go to an auto garage you can rent by the hour so I can use their lift/jack/stands, air tools and good tool selection, I only have a few standard tools, and no jack/stands, though i bet i could get them if you think it's possible to do at home.

Also, I'll be ordering those spacers in just a few days. i'll go for the 20, it seems like everyone really likes them and it's a cheap mod, so i can't think of a reason NOT to do it.
