Default Nitrogen Tire Inflation

i heard a commercial for it today on the radio for jack willaims tire. They fill your tires with nitrogen. The concept makes sense to me, if nitrogen is lighter then air then there is less rolling mass. i think i might do this, it may offset the weight from my wheels and get my MPG back up. i constantly get 30mpg no matter how hard i drive. You can go to www.jackwilliams.com and they have a calculator that figures out the savings. mine would be nearly 120 bucks a year. have you heard anything about it? ever use it? any down sides?

Nitrogen is inert so it's not flammable. Hydrogen on the other hand would be like driving on grenades. :D

i have see enough of the websites now and i see all the benefits of it. but are there down sides? i doubt a tire store is going to tell you any problems. any idea on pricing, ic ant seem to find it anywhere? anyone have this in there tires yet? It seems if NASCAR and NASA use it there is a distinct advantage compared to air. though cost isnt a factor to these guys...but im not paying big bucks to do it. It seems like a great way to offset of the weight from aftermarket wheels.

I am a Die Maker and we use this stuff all the time in dies.

For those who don’t want to read up on it here is the skinny.

It is not flammable.
Its benefit is it won’t expand or contract with the temperature.

For Nascar this is important, for the daily driver who neglects their car it would help.

For people who obsess over their cars including tire pressure there would be little benefit.

Save your $$ and use your tire gage.

Well, if you were really obsessive about tire life and you didn't drive very much, nitrogen would presumably extend tire life by reducing the amount of oxidation inside the tire. On the other hand, the outside of the tire would oxidize as usual. Unless you stored your car in a nitrogen-filled garage.

Guess I'll skip the nitrogen for now.

I work for a gas company and we sell N2 and it costs next to nothing. Walk in..get a small cylinder and fill up. I personally havent done it yet but it is not dangerous at all. Like stated above it's an inert gas and will not ignite.

yea i'm going with sixpac....they use nitrogen because of the pressures involved. i don't think there is but a few ounces weight difference between an amount of compressed air and that same amount of compress nitrogen. save the money and buy those horns!

Think of it this way! If you are driving and your tire goes low on air what do you do? Gas stations don't carry the stuff and most tire shops don't either, So you have to put air in it anyway and it's free.

Nitrogen already makes up 78% of the air we breathe and the air that is pumped into our tires with a regular air pump. I don't see the cost effectiveness of paying anymore money for 22% more nitrogen. IMO it's somewhat overrated and a waste of money.
If nitrogen was say ~50% or less of the regular air make up then maybe would consider. But it's already at 78%...

Im surprised no one picked up on the best benifit of all....increased MPG, up to 25%.

Up from 35 to a possible 44MPG in my box. As gas prices continue there climb, you will start to see more and more of these.

Im looking for a local place myself. My dealer offers the service, but $75 is highway robbery. $40 for all 4 is what Im looking for.
