"wider is better"

Yes, in terms of :
*tends to give better handling around corners/turns
*looks .... maybe, in the eye of the beholder

No, in terms of:
*not as good as a narrower tire in rain and/ or ice/snow situations'
*more contact surface on the ground yields less mpg
*wider = more weight in comparison to something more narrow = less mpg
*tends to be more expensive, per tire vs. a standard stock size(ex. for 15" a 185, 195.. or even a 205 are reasonable priced, anything 215+gets up there

Think about it.

The wheels come that way. It's called anodized aluminum. The paint is rolled on with a roller. Looks good in pics but is quite textured in person. But you can draw on it with chalk.

Not to mention all the extra force and wear on the wheel bearings.

thats a negative Jeff, well partly.

the wheels were custom painted House of Color gold, over the polished alum lips.

but the paint on the CAR was rolled on,

My bad. I've seen wheels like that before but they were anodized. It's kinda the same thing tho. Just a different process.
Maybe they should come like that from the manufacturer.

I think that xA looks so bad because it's parked on un even ground. It pushed the rear drivers side wheel farther outta the wheelwell.
