Same happened to my tC. I just took apart the inside of the hatch to remove that hatch piece and used super glue to glue the broken tabs back on.
It's been good since. Just try to lift from the bottom of the actual hatch and not with the handle.

Mine broke off about 2 years ago.
It's such a cheaply mqade piece of plastic to have to use to lift the rear hatch. Part of Toyota's famous "lean" engineering.
I got the metal one from scionpros, and have had no troubles since. I haven't checked scionpros.com in a long time, so I don't know if they still have them.

You ain't supposed to pull on that thing, wasn't designed for it. We got electric switch to press and your hatch should just drift open. If you need to pull on the darn thing change out the LIFT STRUTS.
And a cheap fix is to use JB weld to glue it back together, try a little searching on this site and you'll find a fix from years ago.

Having looked at how the gas lifts are mounted i think what you are describing is against the laws of physics. Just my opinion, may be your car is different.

Oh well. Maybe your opinion is why your on an ignore list huh?

Same issue happened to my bro-in-law, he bought one a few years after we bought our '05 new... in 2 weeks he had broken the latch 'plastic' since he was trying to use it to open the hatch. Showed him how you just hit the button and guide it open, no issues since. No idea how long those struts should last but mine opens just like it did when it was new.

So true! So I just push on the switch and wait for the hatch to automatically open upward? That sounds so coooollll!!! How much does that mod cost?

Has anyone participated in the class action suit against Scion pertaining to this? I googled Scion xB Rear Hatch Handle and the first sponsored ad is a Law firm looking for testimonies.
I called the firm to ask about the door lock sticking problem. (Broke hatch just from being an ogre and yanking on it too hard.)
