I am using a Saris rack for bicycles and kayaks. Have not had a chance (or good enough weather) to put the kayaks on the box.

I had a Saris (shorter cross member) for the previous cars.
So I already had the bike trays, wheel holders, kayak saddles straps etc.

All the add on’s add up to way more than the base rack so it was less expensive to use the add on stuff and just buy a used cross member that fit the XB from ebay.

I have carried 4 bikes on top of the XB (with 4 people inside). It is a very friendly car for a rack. Only problem is, with 4 bikes I have to carry a milk crate to stand on to reach the inner bikes on the roof. I am 5’10” tall.

Pick your rack carefully, by the time you end up buying all the stuff you need, you are pretty much locked into the vendor. You might want to consider buying used off ebay if cost is a factor.

I have not put the kayaks on the XB yet. I usually use nylon straps to secure the kayaks to the rack and straps on the front and rear to hold the nose and tail down. Not sure how it will work with the front and rear straps hooking onto the front somewhere under the vehicle. Ideas on how to do this are welcome.

Default Load Warrior or Mega Warrior?

thx,
Brian

I have the Yakima Megawarrior WITH the extension on my xB right now. Its the biggest basket you can fit on an xB. I would suggest just the megawarrior (-) the extension or just do the loadwarrior. I have pics but i dont understand the whole http://image_url thing. If someone would help that would be great.

I think a full length rack like the old Vdub busses had would be sweet with the wood slats & all, give it the surf wagon look.

Default Lucas...

Lucas i would love to see those pics!

You just need to put them on your server or I think this web site lets you upload but i'm not familiar with the way to go about that. Maybe someone else can let Lucas know? Then you just put [ img ] http://www.yoursite.com/image.jpg [ /img ] but take out the spaces.

You can also email them to me at brian @ atomicfuze.com

thx,
Brian

Hey guy just lettin ya know i had a set of Yakima racks put on my xb from the dealership cost about 250. 1st had some issues with the locks they didnt bite down good so the lock could secure them (no matter how much adjusted), then also found out that you cant really move the location or slide racks too far past the center of rear door for longer items, apparently brackets will bulge out from frame around door. ALSO dealership consultant said there seems to be an issue with the weather strip getting messed up around the door UNLESS you remove the racks EVERYTIME when done using them !! if weather strip around door gets damaged Yakima MAY reimberse you for repairs(pending if improperly installed) AFTER you have paid for it yourself NOT Toyota! since not Toyota part!! I did not like what I was hearing and as a result dealership bought the racks back from me and since it is not a widespread issue they are not issueing recalls on it. Several of the sales persons however say they are no longer recommending it to thier customers. Also sorry i shoulda taken some pics before removed so you could check it out!

Default Thx Lucas...

Lucas thank you for posting those pics.

That really gives me a good idea of what the different baskets will look like.

I will probably get the LoadWarrior and position it closer to the rear of the xB like the pic of the black xB from above.

There is another post that shows how you can put on Permanent Rails and that is enticing idea as well.

I am going to look for more pics of xBs with the Permanent Rails.

thx for all your help.

Default Thx for the advice 357xb...

Thanks for that valuable advice 357xb.

I am thinking of getting Permanent Rails instead of a Yakima rack.

Hey atomicfuze, I must ask you whats the lesser of the 2 evils? Replace weather stripping or leaks in your roof. I'm and authorized Yakima dealer and have been for 3 years, hice why I have over $1,000 in their stuff. If you put the Q-Towers on correctly, NOT AT THE DEALER, then you wont have a problem Yakima IS the best rack company, period. If people have trouble with the seals, then the Q-Clips aren't adjusted correctly. You have to remember that the dealer isn't an expert with racks so they probably dont know how to install it correctly, therefor causing a "questionable" possibility for leaks. I have the Q-Towers and they are on correct and the seals have hardly budged at all. If you try to drill holes in your roof to install a "rail system", i'm sure you will have more problems in the end. Thats my $.02, but i've been doing this for over 3 years and i know what works. Stay withe Q-Towers, do it yourself and do it right. It WILL take some time and adjusting, but once you get it right, its rock solid and your seals are fine.

Default conflicting reports...

Well there certainly seems to be conflicting reports regarding the Yakima racks.

I wouldn't want to mess up my paint or have a leaky roof but it seems as though both are possible depending on if you go with the Yak or the Perm Rails. Hmmm maybe i will put everything inside?

Thanks for the advice everyone and I can't wait for my Camo xB to get here, I hope they don't run our of green paint ;-)
