I just waited and did the craigslist thing-got the bars and towers for $50 and found a used rack store
who just happened to get the right fit kit in "new" but opened box and that was $30.

Found a steelhead bike mount for $40 but didn't buy it.

Love the rack, but it sure does hurt MPG with two bikes on top. Of course my driving habits don't change, and I insist on going 80 the entire time.

yep a rack is a must! the bike will fit inside with the seats down but it is to dirty to put inside. when i get a rack ill post a pic of it with my king double bass on it not that i would ver drive like that

Here's mine, Yakima roof rack with Thule MOAB. I use it for nearly everything, this time I had a 12 foot A ladder on it for our AlphaSquad shoot at Angels Stadium a couple weeks ago.

I have the Yakima rack, got it from the dealer with locks for $185 the other day. Made my basket out of wire shelving from Lowes, used some weather treated 3/4" plywood I had laying around for extra support, pipe insulation to protect the roof rack, and some ubolts cut to size with a dremel. The cargo box is a freebie I picked up from craigslist and spray painted to make it look good.

The cargo basket and box probably cost me a total of $40 after random purchases and paint.

Hey All,

I recently got a Yakima for my bussy and a rail-style bike rack. I will be taking it out for its first loaded trip soon, but have one BIG question. If you have a fairly heavy fullsize off-road or beach cruiser style bike how do you suggest getting the bike up there by yourself with out possiblly scratching the beejezus out of your roof with the bike. Though I am a tall guy 6'4" it almost seems you need two people or a step ladder of somekind... maybe a blanket or somethig to cover the roof while loading. Thoughts?

The only thing i can tell you is that the more you spend on the bike the lighter they get.
I haven't scratched mine from my bike, but i did when taking the rack itself off the car
