Default Anyone turn their xB into a Cargo Van?

How hard is it to remove the rear seat?

Would you have to construct a sub-floor to have a flat surface?

He could be trying to make a work vehicle. I've seen an xB converted to a "cargo van",
it was a flower shop in Silverdale, WA. I saw it back in Nov. when I still lived out there.

Removing the rear seats is a cinche (sp?). You would more than likely need to make a sub-floor to even out the floor (don't know what you need the space for exactly, so it's hard to tell). I wondered about this option myself, but there's no reason for me to do it. What do you plan on using it for?

I detail cars for a hobby and carry a bunch of supplies, e.g. buffers, wash buckets, waxes & polishes, etc ...

I guess a floor would help keep everything from sliding/flopping around. Maybe something like easy to assemble racks/shelves. This way you can put the seats in anytime you want to convert it back.

Another question: Why use the xB for something like that and not an older pickup (thinking Ranger/S10) or something?

Not wanting to sound like a A$$ but if someone pulled up in a old beat up pickup to detail my car I dont think I would let him touch it.

Yeah I don't need 2 vehicles (and 2 insurance bills). Detailing is just a hobby, not my occupation.

Probably get by with laying the rear seat down and covering it (protecting it).

Yeah honestly I would just do that. with the seats removed it looks pretty ugly and is a bit of a biotch to replace the seats in and out whenever u needed passenger room or cargo room.

Toyota actually has a new cargo liner thing that goes up and covers the back of the rear seats. Pretty neat.

I did it a month ago and I won't be putting the rear seat or spare and cubby back -at all-

The car is noticeably lighter. An old purple-satin-nylon comforter tosses over any valuables I might have. Looks -good- with the car color, too.

Also, the thick spread pads any good stuff I might need to slide into the car

Threw a buddies filthy bike into the xB the other day. Fit ez, flat. No worries for the interior; the spread protected the car from the bike. Wash the spread when it gets dirty. Does not show dirt, though.

The cavernous space (i jk) is satisfying.

Say, if you carry buckets of slop and stuff like that, suggest cutting tall strips of Masonite, slotting them and making custom egg crate to keep your tippables from toppling.

Carson Toyota can sell you a gennie JDM wire mesh screen by which to isolate the cargo area from the front seat passengers. Safety there. Not good looking, I think, unless you use your xB in taxi service (jk)

A false floor would be very easy to make, I think- if a level deck is really wanted.

Then you'd have hidey-space at the rear foot wells. and hing the split false floor to the inverted V brackets you will find under the rear seat cushion.

Jerk up and out on the rear seat asscushion to see what I mean. The main floor is relatively flat. -mattress pad foam under your hinged false floor
would serve to LOCK DOWN hand tools and other small valuables you want in the car but don't want to rattle or become airborne in a crash.

Takes fifteen minutes or less to remove the seats for a look-see-try it for a day or week run.

You may like it this way, and if not a family car, why not go bare? Guys on stock wheels -may feel confident enough to run without a spare. In 300K miles I suppose I've had what?
6 flats, maybe? Near all were preventable if I'd done PM. Four at least, would reinflate with a temp. can of tire inflator/sealer. (screws on the road)

Anyone want an RS2 rear seat cheap? (*I joke) but that seat is gonna last for a long time in the attic.

Did you put some kind of flooring down? What did you do with the seat belts?

requote my post in your form, pls. cuz i proofed and fixed it some.

to answer you: No, I have not fancified the rear yet. I may not bother, but it -would be slick to make a hinged, lift-up deck sort of as described. Prolly not worth the trouble. The purple comforter looks snazz (imo) and stuff can be -under it- or -over it- and no worries... so long as I am not in accident.

Think, if you use the car for hauling, that JDM safety screen could be worth having. (life more important than style).

-Have not bothered to remove the side belts yet. They will come out easy when i bother to do that.

zooom zoom have fun- try it nude. Better rear vision, too- no more seat headrests in the way.

I talk a lot about -possibilities- then i get lazy and settle for an old bed spread for a scooby interior. Add a thick foam pad cut to fit and a bean bag pillow and... you are set for a tailgate sleepover after the bbq... think of all the beach gear you can throw into the back of a stripped xB! Think of the room for stealth audio (footwells!) if you go this way. Open spaces make more bass, too. boinnnnnng boinnnng, sumpthin' like that... -it WILL go deeper the larger the interior's free volume.
Rule of pipes. .... on that thought, you audio guys do open windows for deeper bass notes, yes? no?

Yeah ... I'd have to do something with the floor.

I was talking about the seatbelts that came out of the floor ... they'd certainly get in the way with no rear seat.

Also when you remove the rear seat nuts does it leave a bolt (stud) sticking up?

Thanks for the link.

I wonder if the seat belts require a special tool to remove them?

Yah, that's a good link. I don't know what the remianing protrusions are really for (the stamped steel-welded on inverted "V" or U shape.

They are not -used- in the stock seat mounting. These may/must be for alternate interior anchorage. Like the hinged, two-piece floor idea. I'd run across the width there with a strip of heavy, flat al. and put something like "continuous hinge" along both sides of the (say) two inch wide hinge anchor.
What to make the false decks from? Thin ply would be sturdy enough. Carpeted? Hold downs? Footwells as the new cubbies for small gear and -under the main deck for other flat or low-pro items. Like spare tire in a spray can cuz you canot carry a spare safely, loose, in a car. never ever-- just reminding all for safety.

I just fold the seats down and load up. Thats why I have a backup camera in place. Too many products block my rear view. :D

it looked like the assembly was just bolted on with 12mm or 14mm bolts. i just took a look this afternoon but can't say for sure

Every part unbolts cleanly and leaves nothing but bolt holes through the floor. Threaded inserts. I put the bolts back in so that my Aqua xB conversion van should not sink too quick
