If you want to make your car an AutoX-spec vehicle, I would get new swaybars, adjustable coilovers, strut braces, and some sticky tires.
Number one thing about autocrossing is having FUN!

I would contact the club with which you plan to autocross and ask them if the xB is eligable. The club my husband races with does not permit SUV's of any type, modified or not. Unfortunately, our xB is classified as an SUV. Not in my mind, but that was how it was listed on the title.

There's nothing SUV about them.
seriously, I'd get that fixed, the savings in insurance might be worth the trouble.

Scion is a wagon/hatchback.

theres no real auto-x car. some are just better from the factory than others. but I'd get sway bars and a rear strut bar(if they make them...) Put the front on if you want to test it out but if theres still oversteer take it off and try it out. I think thats how it works for some FWD. Oh and coil-overs will help some. Just get to it handle like its on rails. Its a contest of going the fastest around a course which I bet the short gearing might help with.

just to let you know... the xA will most likely be in the same class as the 1.6 CRX's etc..
you have no chance lol
but yeah, it's all about fun. if you're serious about winning in your class, the scion is not the car for you...
the more modified your car becomes, the harder it'll be to win actually, (unless you don't tell the SCCA about all your modifications, and they'll put you in a lower class)..
let's say you throw on springs and swaybars, and stickier tires.. you now get thrown in Street Prepared.. with all the other 1.5-1.7's on springs and swaybars.. that includes miatas, MR2's (MKI) Civics, CRX's.. and the Mini Cooper..

About a week ago I went to an autox in my xA. The handling was surprising. This was actually the first time I have ever tried it. I got a totally different perspective of driving.
Anyway, I was probably at about 75% of what I could have been doing. I was in second the whole time, and the car has excellent throddle response coming out of the turns.
It's a lot of fun. With just minor upgrades, you can make almost any car be decent in an autox. I was still running on the stock tires, and I know that if I changed those, it would have been a little quicker. There wasn't a lot of body roll. (I had my runs video taped).
All in all, just have fun. You're gonna get addicted though. :D

I would definately check with your local auto-x group before entering an xB. They might not allow the xB to race. Heck, there were some people over at echofans.net that said that some groups wouldn't allow Echos to enter.
Just check first.
I have seen Suzuki Aerios, Chrysler PT Cruisers, and Ford F-150s autocross before, though.

This pic was taken b4 the new koni shocks front and rear ASbs, and upper strut tower bars were all installed.
the only suspension mod i had at this time was H&R lowering rally springs. and it still di very very well. now it doesn't sway as much as it did in that pic, so it rox now!

You'd be better off if you could disable the "electronically controlled" .77g lateral limit. I think it's the DSC, but not sure. With wider tires and larger wheels, you'll be bouncing off of that all day. I'll bet it looks funny, the box leaning and squealing around corners. I'd definitely enjoy watching something like that.

seriously, you people that think scions are made for speed, balance and handling are pathetic. im ashamed to even be on this board because people talk out their asses. "oh i race my xb... scions are racecars" be prepared to be smoked. have you any idea that serious tuners laugh at you for your insignificant mods? oh wow a momo shift ****... now im gonna go autocross my AT box... go for it. but its you that give scions owners a bad name.
im and mr2 owner but ive bought the xb for its functionability as well as the fact its good on gas. if you want a quick car, buy a quick car. have you noticed the xb/xa is so good on gas because of its engine size? maybe its that way for a reason.
