Box the Dragon 2010
Attention All Scion Xb (2004-2006) Owners:
On the July 29-August 1 weekend this summer there will be the 1st annual Scion Xb “Box the Dragon” rally based out of Fontana Village Resort, Fontana, North Carolina. First-generation (2004-2006) Scion Xb owners are welcome to attend.
Driving of the Dragon is on one’s own pace at will, with a “meet and greet” of other Xb owners at specific times.
What: A rally/social gathering of Xb owners, where enthusiasts can get together and discuss cars, modifications and perpetual love of Xb’s
When: July 29-August1, 2010.
July 29, a Thursday, will be the first night. The rally will continue through the weekend.
On the nights of july 30th and 31st, around 7 o’clock, there will be a group gathering at the Resort lodge parking lot. This is an informal, unofficial, meeting, and is not a function of the Resort.
Where: The Fontana Village Resort in Fontana, North Carolina. Accommodations can either be in the form of a room at the lodge or a cabin rental. Information on the resort can be found here:
http://www.fontanavillage.com
The resort is located in beautiful, scenic Appalachian wilderness. “The Dragon”, or Tail of the Dragon, is the nickname for US 129, a curving, winding road along the mountainside. It consists of 318 curves in 11 miles and is a true feat and thrill to drive. Information on The Dragon can be found here:
http://www.tailofthedragon.com
Also, any questions about the event can be emailed to :
boxthedragon@yahoo.com
The event is free of charge to participate, except for room and board.
The event is also not in conjunction with the Fontana village Resort, merely a time and date for owners to socialize and compare cars.

And I agree. Ever since my family and I have been taking vacations to Fontana, there seems to be a great time with car rallies like this, and we thought an Xb one would be great as well. Last year it was the Saturn Sky/Pontiac Solstice, and that was neat. Hopefully this will be something like that.

UPDATE : Status of the Dragon
- The Tennessee Department of Transportation will reopen an 11-mile stretch of U.S. 129/SR115 in Blount County known as “The Dragon” on Monday, April 12 at 8:00 a.m. The stretch of U.S. 129 from the Tabcat Bridge to the North Carolina state line will be open to traffic each day between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. The section of U.S. 129 from just past the Foothills Parkway to the Tabcat Bridge will remain closed as crews work to remove a rockslide that closed the roadway in March.
The Tail of the Dragon, is, in fact, open for driving according to my sources in the Fontana Village Resort. However, the Tennessee side is closed off, so you’ll have to arrive via the NC side. The rockslide is being taken care of, but we should still be able to go. Box the Dragon is still on!
Also, if you plan on going, we’re working on getting sponsors and commercial endorsements for free giveaways and an overall better experience. We are also curious to know how many boxes are coming?

Wow, how did I not see this earlier? This is very interesting and I really would like to go. Questions though.
-How many xB drivers are committed to this thus far?
-No offense, but how organized is this if a 19 year old I have never heard of is putting it together. You may be insanely good at organizing and have everything worked to a tee, but I don't know that, yet.
-How can I trust someone that doesn't know that xB's were produced years 2003-2006.5 and xB is spelled with a little "x" and an uppercase "B"?
-Will there be cake?

Wow, how did I not see this earlier? Your Helmets visor was down! This is very interesting and I really would like to go. We will allow you too, but only if you bring pie Questions though. Ok, but only 4 more are allowed
-How many xB drivers are committed to this thus far? I am, so hopefully there will be a reliable one there as well

You may be insanely good at organizing and have everything worked to a tee, but I don't know that, yet. Agreed, its pure coincidence that this is happening at the same time that I will be there anyway, so if it falls through I might not be too let down. We will just have to wait and see

-Will there be cake? Bird If you come I will make a cake! Otherwise it will be store bought

Box the Dragon 2010
I live couple of hours away and have run my RS 2.0 XB across the Dragon a couple of times. Definately don't try to over drive the curves. Also have to watch out not only for the others driving the road, but Law Enforcement can get very picky. WATCH the Speed Limits, and PLease stay in your lane in the curves. Too many accidents because of this. Speed Limit is Slower on the Tennessee side of the Dragon. I have yet to take my RS 7.0 XB across it. You can go to www.killboy.com to see photos of people driving the Dragon. It is updated every Thursday. This could be a Lot of fun. Hope to see you all there.

Dragon Directions
Interesting. I was just there April 28th-May 1, with my Michigan MINI Motoring Club. GREAT TIME! Excellant road for my MINI - not so sure about my xB though.
Anyway, if you're heading down from the North (like MI or OH), here is one of our group member postings:
"For what it is worth...
I see that GPSs and Google Maps is suggesting the route 441 thru Gatlinburg as an alternate route since 129 is closed. From personal experience I know the traffic on this road (Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg) is horrible. GPS units and Google maps don't know about tourist traffic. After a long drive no one wants to sit in traffic so I asked my East TN Rider peeps:
"Which route would be fastest coming from north of Knoxville to the Dragon: The Cherohala Skyway or 441 ?"
100% of those replying recommended against 441!
Here's a couple responses I got:
"I really don't know which would be fastest but 441 has always been a pain with all the traffic to me. I would use the Cherohala anytime I had the chance."
"Skyway for sure. Splatlinburg sucks."
"My first trip to the Dragon from here in Ohio, I came in through Gatlinburg and 441. I couldn't believe how much traffic I ran into through Gatlinburg... crazy...and I happen to be in the wrong lane for 441 and nobody would let me over..finally made it on to 441 heading to Cherokee and it was bumper to bumper thru that very twisty and scenic section of 441. I've also come down from the Sweetwater area and across the Skyway... much better way to go IMHO."
ALSO:
I noticed on the official MOTD map for coming across the Cherohala Skyway:
Exit 60 on 75 is Hwy 68 to Telico Plains...165 to 143...
Then is has you making a left onto 129 and heading up to the Dragon and then taking 23 (Hellbender) to Fontana.
A much better way is to
Turn RIGHT on 129 towards Robbinsville (fill up on gas, it's gonna be the cheapest you'll find while you are in Dragon territory)
Turn left at second light onto 143 (stop at Ingles for groceries and beer if needed).
Turn left at the stop sign onto 28.
Turn left at the second stop sign. Into fontana you go."

Re:Box the Dragon 2010
More information from the Fontana Village Resort:
The Dragon is looking promising to be open for the last weekend of July, so we’re still hoping to see you all there.
As for the people wondering how many boxes are going to be there, since our event is free we don’t have an official registration list, but the interest and feedback we are getting from people is looking very promising. A decent turnout is expected, so you won’t be alone!
We’re only a month away! I’ll be updating my forum posts more frequently as the event nears, so check up to see the latest. Looking forward to seeing you all there!
