The insurance company wanted the winshield replaced with a real Toyota windshield. Total cost including my 250.00 deductable was $726.13. The man who replaced it said that he has replaced alot of them of the xB but they had been told the newer ones were stronger. Who knows?

yeah i know it's an old topic.

Just noticed the huge amout of pitting in my glass.

Have almost 30k on the 04 xB, one crack. I had cleaned the windscreen inside and out and noticed all the lovely pits.

Poor glass quality for sure.

I got not one, but two window chips on my way to work the day after I bought my xB. Needless to say, I am bummed. I've had it for one week now...and it was damaged goods the day after I bought it. Luckily I have full glass coverage.

my xb just turned over 4,000 miles the other day and today i noticed a 5 inch long crack from the top of the windshield on down ( 5 inches ).

Called insurance which will send glass repair at no charge ( anyone that has auto insurance as already stated SHOULD call you auto insurance to fix the rock chip/crack...it is no charge to you. ( I used to be an agent for 6 years...left for better things but...) The insurance co would rather pay to have rock chips fixed vs. replacing windshields.... ( also to the person that mentioned pitted glass... don't use this as a reason for wanting a new windshield... pitted glass is just normal wear and tear which is never covered...however "sudden breakage" is always covered...so if you get a crack/ or glass is broken that is covered due to damage at a specific time vs.. over a long period of time )

Anyway, the glass guy mentioned he didn't even see any point of impact ( didn't see a rock chip - I thought I saw a very tiny looking chip ) and said it could be just a stress crack... where the car is flexing and causes the glass to crack...

My last car I drove 193,000 before selling- only had to call out the glass guy 3 times all for chips I could easily hear and see when it happened but never ever did it create an actual crack. With the xB, I never heard any rock hit the glass at all... just one day a 5 inch crack..thats it. It sucks to have a new car and a cracked windshield but then again it really isn't a bid deal.

Agreed - the rocks don't deflect as well as a windshield with more angle...basically every other car on the road...plus our cars are low to the ground so just about every rock that gets thrown from a tire will make it over the hood. I don't think our glass is any LESS quality than most other cars...it's just that it needs to be MUCH BETTER because of those reasons.

I've been driving in New England winters for 15 years and this is the very first time I've ever had anything happen to a windshield.

I've got 5300 miles on my xB & just got my second rock chip on my way home from work tonight...actually, theey're not JUST chips...each of them has cracks about 1/4" long coming from them.

It's funny, because I talked to Geico on Tuesday about replacing the windshield due to the first one (I have a glass waiver, so it's free) and I told them I'd wait until spring, because I had a feeling I'd be getting more. I'm glad I did. Unless they start to spread (the first one has four 1/4" cracks 'spidering' out and has yet to grow after about a month), I'll be waiting until the winter dirt has been cleaned from the roads...usually April-ish around here.

Sidenote - if Geico is available to you, I recommend them highly. They were very accomodating, and their rates are great, plus they left windshield 'repair' or 'replace' up to me.

Default a crazy idea

I just found out now that the XB is prone to windshild cracks/chips/explosions.

I wonder if I could get a clear safety film placed over it? like security companies install over shop glass etc?

only if eh.. I think that stuff would not have the same water sheer etc as glass..

I hope I dont have to deal with chips

I advise keeping a distance from the car ahead of you, not driving behind large trucks and getting a good quality strut tie bar that will cut down on body/glass flex. Its all about lowering your chances.

Good call on the upper strut bar... ill have to look into one of those..

My Celica and Civic have them and I love how it tightens things up.

i had one hit my corolla. bought a $10 repair kit, and fixed it. it was barely noticeable. actually you can notice it more from inside the car, than outside the car. it still has the scratch right through it, but it didn't crack. obviously it's easier to crack the windshield on an xb, because of the angles. my buddy tells me he can hear everything hit the windshield on his like sand, and dirt from the road. he also says he runs into a lot of bugs with it. sometimes it's unavoidable. one time i was driving on a back highway road, and a guy was cutting his grass with his tractor, and i swore that all he kicked up would have tore my windshield up, but luckily it didn't.

Default Cracks and chips

146,000+ miles, I have numerous pits, cracks, chips. Meh, learned to live with it, as this windshield seems to attract break-causing debris. Wait till I get a "fix-it-ticket", then replace it
